The plane crash/ destruction was real in 1983 KA007 flew of off course into Soviet space and was shot down.

The Russian guy is Sergei koralev. In our timeline he died in 1967 and the Russian moon hopes went with him. In for all mankind koralev survived his 1967 surgery and continued to run the Russian space program which is why it was so successful

I really appreciate this show for moving at such a good pace. This episode was 62 minutes and packed full of plot. Unfortunately, those aren't deep fakes, they're news broadcasts from 1983 when KAL007 went off course and was shot down by a Russian interceptor. Tom Brokaw gave that report and Ronald Reagan gave that speech. It doesn't seem real to me, either; I was born in 1980, but the Cold War was largely over by the time I was old enough to understand it. When I find myself thinking about how crazy our politics are (today is crazier than at any other point in my life), shows like this remind me that we were once updating the doomsday clock on a daily basis. Losing Tom was such a huge blow because we had only just learned that he was actually a good guy, and obviously his last kind act saved Ellen. She sure took ownership quickly after her husband's advice. You could feel her presence the moment she walked into that meeting room. I remember a few episodes ago when Danny and Karen were sharing a joint behind the Outpost and you said, "This is weird. Is this weird, or am I being weird? This is weird." You weren't being weird. 🤢 I did really like the closing sequence for this episode, the Ride of the Valkyries to calm their nerves and their guts, and the Cosmonauts de-assing the area with the quickness. And an oorah to Tracy for doing that canyon run at 5 m just like she said she could.

> Korean Air Lines Flight 007 (KE007/KAL007)[note 2] was a scheduled Korean Air Lines flight from New York City to Seoul via Anchorage, Alaska. On September 1, 1983, the flight was shot down by a Soviet Sukhoi Su-15 interceptor aircraft. The Boeing 747 airliner was en route from Anchorage to Seoul, but owing to a navigational mistake made by the crew, the airliner drifted from its planned route and flew through Soviet prohibited airspace. The Soviet Air Forces treated the unidentified aircraft as an intruding U.S. spy plane, and destroyed it with air-to-air missiles, after firing warning shots. The Korean airliner eventually crashed into the sea near Moneron Island west of Sakhalin in the Sea of Japan, killing all 269 passengers and crew aboard, including Larry McDonald, a United States representative. The Soviet Union found the wreckage under the sea two weeks later on September 15 and found the flight recorders in October, but this information was kept secret by the Soviet authorities until 1992, after the country's dissolution. <

I loved the Challenger reference / workaround. Buran was real, but the project died on the vine when the Soviet Union collapsed. There's some very sorry-looking photos of the abandoned build, well worth a Google.

Honestly, I had no idea that the shooting down of the airplane was real, so I thought this was another string of great deep fakes. Oops!

That's a really great twist on the show; others, like John Lennon, survived their brushes with death as well in the timeline.

That’s actually the point of divergence in our time lines vs for all mankind. Basically the show is saying had koralev survived his abdominal surgery, this would very probably be our reality. Amazing how history can alter from a single small event changing. Perfectly stated by one of our favourite writers https://youtu.be/herczHmAyno?si=PxeEccjXwTunxDwv

It meant some viewers felt nervous seeing Tom and Ellen talking about boarding a plane to Korea because we know from history that was the year that flight went down and heated up the Cold War.

And Anwar Sadat. The Egyptian leader who made peace with Israel in 1975. He was later assassinated for this ‘betrayal’ Also people like Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II who survived their assassination attempts in our timeline, died in For All Mankind. It’s struck me as a thoughtless alteration to history, because I feel the survival of Sadat, and the deaths of Margaret Thatcher and His holiness John Paul II would have had serious repercussions on world history. Thatcher was like the British Ronald Reagan, very controversial to this day. Some people say she saved the UK and some think she nearly killed it, but everyone admits that the uk changed dramatically under her leadership. She inspired the mentality that led to Brexit. Sadat was a rare leader of a Muslim country who made peace despite the wishes of the people. The peace deal he made stands to this day. If he continued as leader of Egypt then it’s reasonable to think other good things would have happened. John Paul like most popes didn’t have much effect on world events. Unlike most popes he was genuinely respected world wide, even among atheists. He famously requested from hospital to visit his attempted assassin in jail. He went to visit him and asked him why he tried to kill him, the assassin explained his motive and his holiness politely explained to him he was misinformed and misguided. Then the pope told his attempted murderer that he forgave him. They stayed in touch and became friends. Stuff like that is why he was so loved and admired by non Catholics. If he was murdered like in FAM timeline it would have had effects on the church probably making it more militant. The John Lennon thing makes more sense because he actually has a role in FAM season 2 in so far as he campaigns for peace during the rising tensions of 1983 Cold War

In for all mankind the one difference that made us different was Sergei koralev surviving his surgery In the man in the high castle the one difference that made us different is in 1933 Giuseppe singara hit his target (newly elected president Franklin Roosevelt who he missed in real life because the stool he stood on had a wobbly leg) and killed him. Leading to John Gardner becoming president. John Gardner was against the new deal, so with him as president then there no new deal, the depression lasts longer and USA can’t rearm itself before WWII. So without American arms and food, uk falls to the Nazis in may 1940- June 1941. Even if USA still declared war on Germany Without the uk as an ally the USA wouldn’t have a base in which to train and prepare to invade Europe. So d-day wouldn’t happen. USA would likely adopt a position of neutrality/non aggression against Germany which would give Germany time to fight Russia. Then eventually when Germany has conquered everything east of the Atlantic they’d turn to USA. Ultimately they would win and conquer the world and remake it in the image of post WWI German fascism. We didn’t win the war because of Russian army strength, American bomb making technology and British code breaking intelligence all working together…. It wasn’t because of gods grace or dumb luck or hitler’s inability to make a smart military decision after 1940. We won the war and were born after the war in allied countries, all because of a wobbly leg on a stool.

And I think most or all of the footage of real-life politicians and news anchors is just from the real footage of this event, not deepfakes. AI deepfakes weren't even much of a thing yet at the time this season came out.

That Karen and Danny thing is the most universally hated part of the show by the fans.
