The Inedible Mattman!

So I don't think it's any spoiler to say, now, that Joffrey is the ABSOLUTE WORST! The things we've seen so far are just disgusting, and makes any of us watching cringe. But you gotta admit, it makes for compelling television. You never know what is going to happen next and that's what keeps us coming back episode to episode. You have good instincts with characters. Keep it up! :)

Just some background on Ser Davos... because they only hint at it in the show. As was mentioned, he was a smuggler. During Robert's Rebellion, Stannis held Storm's End in Robert's name and was under siege for like a year (by Loras and Margery's father). Davos smuggled in a ship load of onions and saved Stannis from starvation. After the war, Stannis knighted him for his heroic efforts and took the finger ends of his left hand as punishment for the years he was a smuggler. Ser Davos took the onion as his crest and wears his finger bones around his neck for luck and to remind him of Stannis's justice.

Have fun editing this one for YouTube!

The actress that is portraying Talisa (the nurse) is Oona Chaplin, the granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin.

You’re right, between sawing-off-foot-man and rat-torture-chamber, etc. there was an above-average level of of body horror in this episode. Woof. FUCK Littlefinger/Baelish. Trying to hit on Catelyn Stark *WHILE HE HAD HER HUSBAND’S REMAINS OUTSIDE* is . . . . . . yeah. You noticed the Red Woman calls Ser Davos the “Onion Knight”. I couldn’t explain better than Wikipedia, so here’s the skinny on the founding of that: “At the time of Robert Baratheon's rebellion, Davos evaded the blockade of Shipbreaker Bay and smuggled a shipment of onions and salted fish into Storm's End to Stannis Baratheon and his men, who were starving under siege. [. . . ] The food that Davos brought allowed Stannis's men to hold on for almost a year until Eddard Stark arrived to relieve the siege. As a reward for this service, Stannis knighted Davos and awarded him nobility status with choice lands on Cape Wrath, for which Davos chose "Seaworth" as the name of his new house. However, also as a punishment for his years of criminal activity as a smuggler, Stannis personally "shortened" Davos's left hand, cutting off the first joint from each finger. Despite this, Davos found Stannis's ruling fair and just, and kept the bones of his severed fingertips in a pouch hung around his neck as a lucky charm.” I think this info provides important context to Davos, Stannis, and their relationship. It speaks volumes about the type of person Stannis is, which I think matches with what Renly said in this episode — Stannis is powerful, but stuffy, rigid and unlikeable.

I think this episode says something important about Joffrey. This is far from the first time we've seen him doing something heinous, but in this episode it becomes clear that he's not just a nasty little shit or a ruthless man, he's a true sadist. He was offered two beautiful prostitutes, and he was only interested in the pain he could inflict on them. He's beyond regular cruelty - he's twisted. There's no hoping he might grow out of it anymore, he gets off on torturing people - which means that there's little hope for Sansa. Also, it's very interesting that your first instinct was to compare Qarth to Troy. The closest real-life equivalent to Qarth is generally agreed to be Constantinople, another great city in modern-day Turkey, so you were surprisingly close for only having seen a glimpse of it !

The birth scene here is one I feel like could have done with *less* budget, not more. In the book it's described as more like a shadow on the wall (fitting in with her bit about shadows being an aspect of light) and Davos not even being sure if he saw something supernatural happen, I would have preferred a more subtle effect over CGI smoke demon.

Bronn's quote is definitely on a t-shirt, coffee mug, etc. We etched it into a wine glass along with a bunch of other quotes for a GoT party. :) Kind of a slow episode, but still full of content, and extreme on the horror. The night truly is dark and full of terrors.

Youtalkingtome

Having not read the book it was still disturbing and effective for me. At least the CGI looked pretty solid!

Youtalkingtome

Truly a sadist. Just a sick individual. I love Greek mythology and the costuming and walls of the city reminded me of Troy!

Youtalkingtome

Super unlikeable, he's more like Robert than Renly for sure. Littlefinger can die any episode now. I'll be so fine with it.

Youtalkingtome

I like Davos. He seems decent and can at least recognize that what Stannis is doing is strange, to say the least!

Youtalkingtome

Hey thank you! This show is very compelling and even though some of the episodes are tough to watch, it's amazing TV.

Can’t believe I didn’t comment on this, in case no one else has — Lancel is Cersei’s cousin. So, for all the talk she does about her and Jamie being soulmates or whatever, she WILL, ALSO do incest with anyone who she thinks can help her out. Yuk. Tyrion didn’t even seem surprised when he confronted her about it.

Madison Dickson

I always thought she was trying to fill James place and lancell was the closest she could get.

Youtalkingtome

That's messed up on so many levels. I know this show is more complicated than heroes and villains but good lord I hate her.

Balazs Foldes

Ohhh, maybe the cunning Lancel seduced poor innocent Cersei, then tries to spin a tale as if she was to be blamed.
