47:33 Ahhhhh, you said "That knee is done"... Not what it sounded like at first! 🤣

The d'angelo speech explaining chess and linking it to the game is so well written just one of the hundreds of scenes were show excels. the guy playing chess and then punching the cop is called Bodie(for your note). I had a little chuckle when you thought Omar and his crew were cops giving what they went on to do later in that episode. Michael K williams was in broadwalk empire and he's really good in that too. I also think it's a nice touch they have the two old guys in it, I think you get that in every public service job where there is a old guys that have checked out just counting the days to retirement so it's not even worth firing them.

omar. 🙂

Omar coming... Michael Kenneth Williams had minor parts in this show or that show... but The Wire is where he got big.

You guys were *just* talking about the hierarchy of the Barksdale crew and I knew that chess scene was coming up. Such great writing that gives you exposition without it feeling like exposition. I was just thinking the other day that something I love about The Wire is that there aren't really standout episodes; it's just so consistently excellent. But there are standout moments, and the introduction of Omar is one of them.

I totally agree, fantastic use of exposition. It was a great introduction, can't wait to see what he's all about

Totally thought they were cops at first! having the two checked out old guys is amazing. Adds a certain realism and really creates a lived in world. Love it

So...not undercover police then. 🤣

REWATCHING THIS WITH YOU GUYS REMINDS ME HOW MUCH MCNULTY PISSED ME OFF FOR HUGE PARTS OF THIS SERIES

Robert Bauman

McNulty is a talented detective but his anti-authority streak can make him more trouble than he's worth sometimes. Greggs is much better at balancing everything while also clearly seeing all of the issues in the PD. As you can see there are a handful of competent cops on the detail (McNulty (when he's not self-destructing), Greggs, Sydnor, and Lester) but they are unfortunately bogged down by the other incompetent cops and bureaucratic politics. There is a common thread throughout the show of institutions either being static or a net negative, but still not changing.

It is literally impossible for me to read "Oh indeed" and not hear it in his voice.

Youtalkingtome

I bet that will make things frustrating going forward. The politics. I have no idea where this show is going but it doesn't feel the most hopeful. Fantastic writing and I love the realism of it.

IT SORT OF GOES UP AND DOWN. I FEEL LIKE IN MOST CASES YOU CAN STOMACH IT BECAUSE HE IS GENUINELY TRYING TO DO WHAT HE BELIEVES IS RIGHT. ITS THE MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY STUFF THAT I FIND FRUSTRATING

Daniel Lydford

You guys Omar, and his crew cops, and I started laughing out loud. That was hilarious.
