man deathly hallows was an experience when it came out. i was in drivers ed when the book was released and there was his long hallway of chairs to sit at and wait for your class to start and we were all glued to our books and having full-fledged book club discussions lol then the movies came out and somehow my dad scored us early release tickets through his work and we got to see it at a private showing at a special theater and it was so incredible!!! so many memories surrounding the series, but especially here at the end with part 1 and 2 it just felt even more special

Unfortunately, there’s no book versions of the Fantastic Beasts series. There is a Fantastic Beasts book, but it’s a reference guide, literally to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Rowling wrote the screenplays for those movies directly. They’re not bad, but they’re not great. The expansion of the mythology and the universe is pretty compelling, but the story itself isn’t paced well and introduces a lot of stuff that doesn’t make sense.

“I like that the owl’s kind of getting in on it, too… …okay…” That’s when you know the movie isn’t playing around. Right out the gate. And I’m not sure about kids, but this movie came out when I was 20 (and funnily enough studying abroad in England at the time), and I absolutely sobbed. I’ve seen this movie countless times, and Dobby’s death never fails to bring the tears.

Yaaaay I’ve been waiting! I really enjoy this movie. A lot of great character stuff.

I got mine at a midnight release and was in summer classes, but I had it with me everywhere. Read it on the subway, and I remember reading it in my film class under the table while we were watching something boring. XD

If you're a fan of audio books, the Harry Potter ones are really good, read by Stephen Fry.

You noticed that Harry said "you-know-who" instead of Voldemort at one point, and you said he's gotten less bold, but that's not it. The movies weirdly don't explain this, but the reason why two Death-Eaters immediately find them in that café at the beginning is because somehow Voldemort managed to enchant his own name, so that the Death-Eaters can find anyone who pronounces it. Since only members of the Order are brave enough to do so at this point, it's a great way to track them down. Once Harry and co figure this out, they stop saying the name. This is also why Death-Eaters immediately swarm in when Harry asks, "Who took her ?", and Xenophilius answers, "Voldemort". While it's not a bad movie, this is my least favorite one, because it just doesn't really feel like a complete story to me. Of course that's to be expected since it's essentially half a book, but I feel like there's no satisfying ending. I also don't really like the pacing of it, the whole middle of the movie feels like nothing much is happening. On the bright side, the next and last one is truly excellent, and a worthy conclusion to the series. Can't wait !

The piece of mirror (in the books) is from a pair Sirius gave Harry, they each had one so they could talk through them. It gets broken, and Harry keeps looking at it because he sees an eye from time to time.

Yeah, there were many events for the realease of these films. It was very special indeed, I remember. In my country, there was a national contest to determine which city would host the Dethaly Hallows Premiere in the country. So you had to make certain things/games etc... to win.

Tiffany T

Soooo many pieces from the books don't make it to the movies. That one in particular really irks me.

You may not remember but they touch upon the wands between harry and voldemort being twins in the first movie when he first gets it. I went to these movies with my family as they released. I was 8 when the first movie came out. It really was a remarkable experience growing up with the characters. Truly nothing like it and I dont know if it can be done this well again.

I listened to the audiobooks and the guy does all of the voices. It’s very entertaining. I only read the final book as the audio version wasn’t yet out and I literally finished it in the parking lot of the movie theater to see Deathly Hallows part 2 with some friends.

Jeff

I don't remember if I already suggested this, but the "Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts" is quite good and is available on Max. You guys might consider reacting to it when you're finished with the films.

i also got my copy at midnight. stayed up for a couple hours reading, until i had to sleep. the next day i was reading it on the train, across from a guy who was also reading it. a woman walked up and asked if we knew each other. when we said no, she pointed out we were reading the same book so maybe we should GET to know each other - like it could be a love connection. i'm sure another 12 people elsewhere on the train were also reading it, but 🤷‍♀️.

These started the whole trend of YA adaptations splitting the final book into two movies. They left out Bill Weasley from the last movie, in the book the werewolf was one of the Death Eaters that infiltrated Hogwarts and Bill got those scars fighting him. He picked up a few werewolf-ish traits but didn't become one. The Weasleys' house getting burned down in the last movie was an invention for the film, it makes it a bit weird that they're in a temporary place now but still somehow hosting a big wedding there. One of my favorite badass bits they left out of this movie is after the new Minister (Bill Nighy's character) tries to get Harry to work with him, Harry points to the "I must not tell lies" scar he still has on his hand from Umbridge's quill, and says something like "remember, I don't like your (the ministry's) methods". I think 0 people were surprised that Umbridge was fully on board with the Death Eaters here. Hermione is certainly the smartest of the trio, but these movies have a bad habit of giving all of Ron's occasional smart moments to her so Ron comes off a lot dumber than in the books.

Balazs Foldes

yeah, I blame the movies. I mean Harry suddenly has this wonderful piece of glass, pretty darn difficult to randomly guess, what it should be.

Youtalkingtome

Subtle differences, obviously not having read the books, I like the choices. I think reading the books first would make the movies disappointing in a way. Which is why I'm glad that I'm reading them last.

Youtalkingtome

I can see how this could not be someone's favorite but I still really enjoyed it. In my mind I'll probably see this and the next one as one long film.

Youtalkingtome

I remember when it came out as well and I felt left out lol. I can't wait to have the first time experience of reading these stories.

Jeff

It's a tv special made for HBO Max in 2022 marking the 20th anniversary of the first movie. It reunites many of the cast and crew and is surprisingly well-done and occasionally very moving. I think you'll both enjoy it.

Brian Harris

Maybe watch them offline. There are some nice performances. Colin Farrell is terrific in the first one, and Jude Law is surprisingly credible. And like I said, the mythology and backstory are great. But I don’t know what kind of engagement you’re going to get, if that matters. Between Depp and Rowling, there are a lot of folks out there who are rather hostile to those movies, hence them stopping three movies into what was supposed to be a five-film saga.

dys

The first one's pretty fun but not that memorable. The rest are trash.

Brian Harris

I remember feeling surprised that the first time I’d been impressed with Farrell in a long time was in that movie.

I saw most of the HP films in the theater, including this one. One of my favorite moments was when Hermione obliviated her parents to protect them. This was a rare case of the film doing it better than the book. It took my breath away and my friend, a grown man who'd also read (listened to in his case) and I were brought to tears. Regarding the many deaths...when I read the books I put my book down and had a moment of silence for each, starting with Hedwig. It's said that her death was a symbol of terminating Harry's connection to Hogwarts. Her loss was massive and the first of many. RIP

Youtalkingtome

I couldn't believe they did it. At the very beginning of the film too. I loved that bird so much. Breaks my heart

Danielle

Other people have said two things I was going to say (the jinx Voldemort put on saying his name that breaks all enchantments as well as suggesting the 20th Anniversary documentary which is honestly a must watch after the films as it's filled with bts and great interviews from the cast, all the directors, the crew, etc.) but I did want to say something about Grindelwald. He's, of course, much more fleshed out in the books but what he's really known for is basically being Voldemort before Voldemort and one of Dumbledore's main accomplishments was beating and putting away Grindelwald, who was once his best friend, though, of course what happened is not quite that simple. The prequel stories (Fantastic Beasts) explore this backstory between Dumbledore and Grindelwald as the underlying (but a bit more loosely adapted than HP) narrative of those movies. They aren't great but they aren't as terrible as people say. It's like The Hobbit trilogy isn't LOTR but they're not completely horrible, either. It's hard to catch lightning in a bottle twice.

Jamie Morgan

I really, really like the first Fantastic Beasts movie, it's super charming! The second one was meh and I don't think I've seen any of the others, but I actually do recommend the first one. It works perfectly well as a standalone movie.

Jamie Morgan

Somehow, I am never, ever, EVER prepared for Hedwig's death. She's just one of those characters who you'd think would have enough plot armour to see her through to the end, but no. And Harry doesn't even get a chance to grieve for her, it breaks my heart </3

Rewatching this movie made me realize how good the acting is in this one

Youtalkingtome

It really is. The main cast is phenomenal but you have trained Shakespearean actors in these films going for it! They take it so serious and it's clearly not just a paycheck job. They bring their all.
