The Inedible Mattman!

One of the reasons I love this show so much is that the characters grow and change as the decade does. The show begins in the early 60s, and all of the characters are still representative of that 50's white culture. Betty is the perfect representation of how things "were". But as the decade changes and people change, Betty is the only one who remains who she always was. She holds onto her notions about being that perfect 50's wife. And of course, because that becomes an irrelevant form of Americana, she gets cancer. This is how the "old way" dies.
