I see both sides between Dani and Will, but ultimately I come down on Will's side. Dani handled that decently well for someone of the time (a hell of a lot better than Deke handled Ellen's coming out), but Will *didn't* actually make a big deal of it. He mentioned a basic fact about himself in a matter-of-fact way, even though he must have known it would blow up I don't think he bears responsibility for it. 1995 does feel a bit late to have that level of hysteria about HIV spreading through simple proximity. That's 10 years after Ryan White, the kid who got HIV from a blood transfusion and was blocked from going to school. Even by then doctors were pretty sure there wasn't any risk in that, by '95 maybe uneducated people would still worry about that kind of thing but I feel like an astronaut would know better.

I agree. I completely get Dani's perspective (the focus of the mission), but Will has a unique opportunity and maybe even a responsibility to speak up for his marginalized community. And maybe in the Soviet Union their understanding of how HIV is spread is behind, but it was definitely odd that when the cosmonaut voiced it, Dani didn't correct him (as if she didn't know, either).

Rolan defected to the US pretty early in the AIDS crisis though so I imagine his thinking about it would be more shaped by the American media.
