My favorite (and probably a lot of others favorite) non season premiere/finale episode.

Eleanor, Jason and Tahani all have their afterlife memories back. Michael gives Jason his memories back on their way to rescue Janet and he tells him he's already given Eleanor and Tahani theirs. So Chidi was the only one left. I love how most of this episode takes place within the space of one second. That slo-mo drink spill (and drink creation by Janet) is so genius. And oh man, the note. [rot13 for spoilers] "V'z abg gur xvaq bs crefba jub pna whfg jnyx guebhtu n qbbe jvgubhg xabjvat jung'f ba gur bgure fvqr." Well said. As to memories, we had an episode devoting to Eleanor getting hers back, back in season 3. Remember Michael guiding her through all of them in Phoenix, while they kept having to leave places that wanted to shoot porn?

DelGuy03

I love that part of Chidi's story is how he learned something from each of the others, in scenes that we never saw before. And that fork in the disposal is a great callback to Chidi telling Eleanor that that's what his brain feels like all the time. This was the point where we original viewers had to wait 6 weeks for the next one, over networks' holiday break from new episodes. Oh the suspense! I never expected that we'd get an episode about Chidi's backstory at this point. But it turned out to be just what I needed.

Actually, I LOVE the ending of LOST. And from what I've seen, that is an increasingly popular opinion in online spaces. Some (not all, but a major portion) of the hatred towards it sprung from a complete misunderstanding of what happened in it. I also just think that the show was ahead of its time in certain ways - there are a lot of questions that the show gets flak for leaving unanswered which it actually *did* answer, and people just forgot or didn't catch it because the show ran for so long and viewing habits of the time were very different from how they are now. As someone who watched the whole thing over the course of a couple of months many years after it came out, I think that most of it has held up very well over time and would actually have been better-suited to the 2010s TV landscape than it was to the 2000s one. I don't know if I would specifically recommend that you react to it, since it's already quite a popular show to react to and you tend to cover stuff that barely anyone else has done, but I would definitely suggest watching it in some form eventually.

The note gets me every time.

I was going to say the exact same thing about the LOST ending. I loved it, so did the people closest to me who also watched it, and since then it really does seem like every time someone says they didn't like it you find out they just didn't understand it. It's fascinating how just a little B-roll over the credits can do so much damage. Fittingly, The Good Place has a finale I place right up there with LOST's as ones I absolutely adore the everloving crap out of. There's no question in my mind that Joe and Kevin are going to share that sentiment in a few weeks.

TouchTheGarlic

It's actually rather fitting that they brought up LOST in a reaction to The Good Place, as IIRC Michael Schur has talked about how LOST was one of the main creative inspirations for The Good Place. The opening montage of the Doug Forcett episode in Season 3 was basically a shot-for-shot remake of a famous scene from LOST, and there have been a number of other stylistic tributes like that (including the opening shot of the entire show).

Well you were wondering if we would get Chidi's childhood and how the way he was raised influenced him, like we did with the other three characters. The writers were saving it for this episode

Didn't realize how influential LOST was on this show. We've never seen it, so don't really have a point of reference. Like we said, we know it's a controversial ending but we haven't heard anything bad about TBP!

My husband recently finished a rewatch and said the last season was better than he remembered (although it still wasn’t his favorite). It was released over so many years with so many story lines that it was hard to follow back when it was first released.

Michael Manville

LOST and TGP have a ton in common even if they are very different shows. TGP is my favorite show, and LOST was until that point. It's a great show and great for reactions. I hope you get to it.

Flashback episodes are often useless cheap filler. This episode is one of the finest of the whole show.

Jeff

"I must away and tend to my ravens" is a great line.

Jamie Morgan

I swear this episode is 5 minutes long, the pacing is incredible. Also, the little kid playing Chidi is amazing - his "ooooh no..." is ON POINT!

so... the crying has started. it caught me unawares, honestly. I think it has something to do with the fact that I am also watching Nobody Wants This with Kristen Bell right now and I am crushing particularly hard on her lol I like how nuanced Chidi's performance is here. he didn't suddenly become more decisive. he just gradually learnt what is important to *him* and how to prioritise results when it comes to these things. he is still anxious, he still gets stomach aches, he still seems confused... I appreciate it. some of the others seem to have made a 180 (*khm* Eleanor *khm*) but Chidi remains basically himself, just an updated version somehow also, yay to 4 more episodes ;) they are really needed to wrap up this story ^^

Maria Stoycheva

hey all, which is the next show we should recommend the guys watch? I am drawing a blank right now but it should be something with real payoff ^^

I like the idea that Eleanor was smiling at the end because she read the note in the reflection of Chidi's glasses like she did to cheat at charades

I have to pile on here - Kevin continues to state how bad the ending to LOST was even though he hasn't seen it which TBF, isn't fair. The finale episode is a 9.1 on IMDB, it was NOT a horrible ending. It has been my #1 show since it aired, my avatar here is a recreated picture from the show (I took the Lost tour in Hawaii last April and got to see a lot of the filming locations, yes 20 years after it aired they still are doing the Lost tour). Lost is VERY serialized, you can't jump back in after missing a season or even an episode, that's why it never caught on in syndication. But I've watched probably all of the reactors to Lost on youtube (gotta be pushing 50 by now), binging this show like J&K would makes a huge difference in retention, connection and understanding of the show. I get soooo frustrated by people trashing the show's ending that they haven't seen, especially one like Lost that won multiple Emmys (Drama, acting, music, et al) because some people showed up for the series finale and didn't understand what was going on. Kevin - watch the show - you will be amazed and you WILL get the ending if you watch it with us. It sounds like you have the support of at least 5 of us Losties currently here. Average IMDB episode ratings G.O.T. seasons 1-7 9.0 Lost 8.5 Mad Men 8.4 Marvelous Mrs Maisel 8.4 Americans 8.3 West Wing 8.2 G.O.T. season 8 - 6.4

@Weird Magic As an IMDb aficionado, I actually have some interesting trivia about the rating on the finale of LOST. As I'm sure you're aware, the LOST finales are all multi-part episodes. IMDb can be strange about capturing multi-part episodes, because (in cases like the LOST finales where they all aired in one night) depending on who added the data, when, and what their source was, sometimes they'll appear on IMDb as multiple episodes and sometimes they'll appear as one. In the case of the LOST finales in particular, there has been a lot of chaos and upheaval in the IMDb listings, with episodes that spent years listed as one episode recently being split in two (including the finales of Seasons 3 & 6). Now, here's where the rating comes into play. When an episode is split in two, what actually happens behind the scenes is a new episode entry is added (Part 2), and the original episode entry is renamed to Part 1. Now, all of a sudden, all the ratings and reviews which were intended to refer to the whole finale are only appearing on the first part. What this means is that the first part has way more ratings and reviews than the second part, including all those of people that watched it and rated it when it aired, whereas the second part pretty much only has the ratings and reviews of those who watched it and rated it recently. In the case of the LOST finale specifically: Part 1 = 8.3/10 from 12,629 people Part 2 = 9.1/10 from 3,501 people This supports the assertion that I made in my initial comment - that the general response to the LOST finale was quite mixed upon release but has grown much more positive with time. It also serves as a reminder to always pay attention to the *number* of ratings just as much as the ratings themselves.
