You guys gotta get Sleepless in Seattle on the watchlist. And My Best Friend’s Wedding!

Jeff

I'm so glad you guys enjoyed this! I wasn't sure how it would hold up after 25 years, but it certainly does. The writer, Richard Curtis, previously wrote "Four Weddings and a Funeral," also starring Hugh Grant; you might consider checking that out as well. The actor who played their friend, Bernie, was Hugh Bonneville; he later became better known as one of the lead actors in "Downton Abbey" which you may also be watching someday. I was just reading that this film was originally 3.5 hours long, so the director had to cut 90 minutes. I can't really imagine what they cut out of it, because it seems just fine as it is.

I'm glad that they cut it down. This doesn't scream epic romance. It was so wonderful though. I loved the pacing. They really made something special. I would love to check out Four Weddings and a Funeral!

I have not watched this movie in probably 20 years. I had even forgotten I own the soundtrack till I started knowing every song. I was working on Julia’s next film after this one when this came out and everyone got so excited how well this one did even though it completely overshadowed our movie that came out six months later. This is a great film and all the reasons I loved it back then completely came back to me. I’m glad you liked it.

My go to Hugh Grant movies are Jane Austens Sense and sensibility, that also has Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman, and Bridget Jones diary. Both would be a great ones for you to see 🥰

I feel like sleepless in seattle has aged poorly but my best friends wedding only gets better with time. You've got mail is another from that era that is just as good as ever.

Four Weddings and a Funeral is honestly one of my favorite movies ever. It still makes me laugh every time and there are a couple lines/jokes that have basically become live action memes for me.

In terms of a non-romcom Julia Roberts movie, Erin Brockovich is actually pretty good. Excellent cast and interesting direction. I love teeny Mischa Barton’s two minutes in this movie. And Emma Chambers, who plays Hugh’s sister, is a legend on a Dawn French BBC comedy series from the 90s called The Vicar of Dibley. It’s very silly but you guys might love it. Also a Richard Curtis production and lots of cast crossover with other stuff like Four Weddings and Harry Potter.

You’ve Got Mail is another top tier movie for me. I watch it every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas (yes I know only some of the movie takes place then but it still counts).

I am determined that if I ever meet another celebrity I will be as cool as a cucumber. In the past I have been a total spaz. I once passed Eriq Lasalle from E.R. In Times Square, it was just a quick, hey I recognize that guy. But I met Dule’ Hill and his wife (then fiancée) on a train from NY to Philly and I totally West Wing fan-girled him. He and his wife were on the show Ballers at the time and they said Duane Johnson is super nice and great to work with. He posed for a selfie with me. Last summer, I saw Hugh Jackman at an ATM in London. He was with his son so I didn’t want to bug him, but I was amazed that I was the only person on the street who noticed him. I noticed his calves immediately! I was on a flight from NOLA to Denver with Eddie Jemison, he played the tech surveillance guy in the Oceans movies. Ironically, Oceans 11 was one of the movie options on that SW flight. I tried to find him at the luggage carousel, but he must have changed planes to an L.A. flight or had no checked bags. So I never got to meet him.

I feel like if I ever saw Eriq Lasalle, I would have sung "just let your soul Gloooooooow" to him. But I would definitely lost it at Dule Hill. Lost it.

not my favorite rom com - i mainly care about the friends and the readers of horse & hound, but i hope y'all enjoyed it.

We have to do Four Weddings at some point. Erin Brockovich would be fun, I have some pretty big Soderbergh blind spots.

I remember my mom rented Bridget Jones all the time when I was a kid and I wanted to watch it with her but she would never let me! I don't know if it was because it was graphic or she just wanted some alone time lmao.

Bridget Jones and Two weeks notice are great. I saw somebody recommending Erin Brockovich which is amazing, but not fully a romcom. I am on a Julia Roberts binge right now and I discovered another great movie of hers - Steel Magnolias The Holiday is the best Christmas romcom ever. It has Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black

Yannick Denis-Trudel

All great rom-coms suggested in here (Four weddings and a funeral, You've got mail, Bridget Jones' diary) but I'll add 2 that may have passed under the radar (well the 1st one perhaps not) When Harry met Sally (the OG of Rom-Coms) Short, great pacing, and comedy up the wazoo! and 50 first dates! This one is a hidden gems for the genre. Don't be alarmed by Adam Sandler (yes, there's 1 scene that I could delete entirely, with the walrus) but the premise is absolutely incredible, and the last scene makes me cry every time!

It’s Runaway Bride. The cast and crew of Pretty Woman reunited 10 years later to just make a fun movie. It got panned by critics for not being as high quality as Pretty Woman but it wasn’t trying to be. After all the more dramatic roles Julia and Richard Gere had done they enjoyed having a chance to spend a few weeks filming in a Stars Hollow like small town 20 minutes from the beach. I didn’t get to interact with Julia much. I was working on the production design side but director Garry Marshall is as funny as the stuff he writes.

Emily Mortimer, who plays the "Perfect Girl" is in The Newsroom, which I imagine you'll get to sometime after The West Wing.

"This guy sucks". It sets you up for Spike to deliver what is arguably the finest, most romantic, line in cinematic history. "You daft prick".
