Yannick Denis-Trudel

Lady Olena is an AMAZING character, played by Diana Rigg (Tracy Bond, famous Bond girl and wed to James Bond in "On her Majesty's secret service")

Yannick Denis-Trudel

Jojen Reed is played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Queen's gambit, and the young Sam in Love Actually). And he did say that Bran is a warg... the 3-eyed raven he sees in his dreams is of another significance.

This episode gives us so much story advancement (Jon beyond the wall, Bran and Jojen, Samwell and the night's watch north of the wall, Arya Gendry & Hot Pie meeting the Brotherhood without banners, Theon being tortured and could be escaping soon with the help of his sister, King's Landing with Sansa Cersei Margery & Lady Olena, Tyrion and Shae, etc.) and at the same time as you get some glimpse of exposition (what's a warg, the Brotherhood without banners) And it goes by in a snap (almost a 1h00 episode here!)

Olena is one of my favorite characters in this whole series. Do yourself a favor and google what Diana Rigg looked like when she was young, and compare to Natalie Dormer playing her granddaughter Margaery. Fantastic casting, Natalie Dormer is the spitting image of Diana Rigg when she was that age.

Arya chose her opponent poorly. The show doesn't play it up much, but in the book Thoros of Myr is one of the better fighters in Westeros... even drunk. He became a favored companion of Robert... especially when it came to drinking. They mentioned him in the first season when Jory and Jaime were reminiscing about the siege on Pike. Thoros was the one that charged through the breach with his flaming sword. At the Hand's Tourney... in the book there is more competition than just the joust. There is an archery contest and a melee. Thoros wins the melee. Sorry to go on and on... but he's one of my favorite characters in the books. In the show... he's fine. I love the show... but the sad thing is that most of my favorite characters from the books were either underwritten... or never even added (here's to you Strong Belwas and Victarion Greyjoy).

Thoros got a mention early in the first season, when Jaime and Jory (Ned's guard captain) were reminiscing about fighting against the Greyjoy rebelling and mentioned Thoros with his flaming sword. The Jaime and Brienne stuff is almost a buddy cop story at this point, I love it.

As far as smaller but impactful roles go in the adaptation from book to show, I thought they did Thoros really well. I like the actor Paul Kaye a lot. He also played Terry Pratchett (my favorite author in all of fiction) in Terry Pratchett: Back in Black, narrating what is otherwise a nonfictional documentary about his life, and so thoroughly inhabited him it was almost like having Sir Pterry back for a little while. There's another redheaded character briefly seen in this episode who hasn't had much if any lines yet, who's one of my favorite side characters from the books and is much less memorably portrayed compared to the source material. That character does get more like his book characterization in the later seasons though.

"The subtleties of politics are often lost on me". Margaery is such an amazing character and Natalie Dormer's performance is perfect. In lesser hands her ego-stroking would come off as fatuous.

I have to be honest, I had to skip the Theon scenes - they're the one thing in the entire show that I just can't bring myself to rewatch. There's no shortage of violence on this show but for some reason these are the only ones that really get to me. The crossbow scene on the other hand - I just love how well Margaery is manoeuvering in King's Landing. She just learnt that the man she's going to have to live with for the rest of her life is a sadistic monster, and instead of being terrified, she uses that as a way to get closer to him, by making him think that she shares his inclinations. Truly a wolf in sheep's clothing.

I can't wait to finally check the books out. I love this world. As far as Thoros goes, I really liked his character so far. Portrayed with a ton of charisma

You're so right, so much thrown our way. Storylines converging and moving so fast, you can tell it's leading to something!

HOLD UP. That's Diana Ring?? Tracy? I'm a massive Bond fan! I can't believe that's her. This is blowing my mind.

Mithroch

Oh I agree. I think he's played excellently. A lot of this is just grumbles over minutia... not real complaints.

I didn’t know that about him portraying Terry Pratchett! As a fellow fan, I’ll have to check that out!!

The scene between Olenna, Margaery, and Sansa is one of my favorite in the entire show — truly a founding moment of Team “Girls Who Don’t Do What They’re Told”.

The actor portraying Jojen is from Godless, but also Liam Neeson’s son from Love Actually.
