Mondays, Am I Right?

My wife and I just finished Kristen Bell's new romantic comedy series Nobody Wants This (on Netflix). Excellent fun and no surprise that S2 has already been greenlit.

I usually do The Wire first and watch the Good Place video for "dessert." But I needed dessert first today.

dys

I feel that, not in the best headspace either after last night.

Two ongoing Bad Place employee jokes that I love returned in this episode: They curse by saying "what the here?" And (because of the Jeremy Bearimy loop-around) their technology isn't in sync with ours -- their computers seem stuck in the 1980s or 90s.

If you're looking for a wildly creative comedy series to watch, Coupling (British version) is now on Peacock. The writer was Steven Moffat who would go on to head up Dr Who. It's kinda like Friends.....but on crack. The show ran for four seasons but a total of only 28 episodes (which is basically a Good Place shout-out....). So you can bail at the end of the first season (six episodes) if it doesn't tick your funny boxes.

Depressing fact: farm-raised fish isn't necessarily more sustainable because they just feed them less marketable wild-caught fish.

Exact thing I told my friends. Eat dessert first today. Burn the good candles you’re saving. Use the expensive bath oil. Take care of you. ❤️

I had the same feeling when this episode ended. “Now what?” They knew what they were doing. I’m looking forward to the next two episodes.

As a bit of a treat, the finale is almost an hour long (53 minutes). So they have a bit of time.

I was curious about this series because I love Kristen Bell (because she's a great actress, but also because she's in my top 3 celebrity crushes). I'm a little hesitant to get into it because of this one take I read that it does some bad stereotyping of Jewish women where Kristen Bell the gentile is the only rational woman in the rabbi love interest's life. Of course as a technically not Jewish but half-Jewish on my dad's side dude, I've dated Jewish girls who did fit pretty close to some of those stereotypes. So I should probably give that series a shot.

I'm trying to think of what the natural followup to this series would be, because this is such an obvious followup to Ted Lasso but there isn't much else quite like it. There's Upload, which has a similar premise but in a digital afterlife rather than a supernatural one, but it's just... fine. Not a bad show at all, but not nearly as funny, clever, philosophical, or heartfelt. I just keep coming back to wanting to recommend Bojack Horseman. It's also a show about terrible people learning to be better, but it's much more bleak and cynical. But somehow that makes the moments of genuine growth and human connection that much more earned and real. For half of the first season it just seems like it's going to be another mean-spirited comedy about terrible people in the vein of Family Guy. But it becomes something so much more and so meaningful that I can hardly even think about that show without tearing up.

Bojack Horseman is easily on my list of the best television shows of all time. I wish I could watch it again for the first time.

So.....obviously you'd need to ask a Jew and also a Gentile lady to get a proper perspective....and I am disqualified on both fronts. 🙂 That said, I'll give you mine anyway. 🤩 Apparently the show was originally going to be titled "Shiksa". > Shiksa (Yiddish: שיקסע, romanized: shikse) is an often disparaging[1] term for a gentile[a] woman or girl. The word, which is of Yiddish origin, has moved into English usage and some Hebrew usage (as well as Polish and German), mostly in North American Jewish culture. < https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiksa That word gets used plenty in the show, and it has apparently caused the disquiet that you have heard. If I had to guess it's NOT Gentiles that are upset (as they might reasonably be), but the Jewish community since they presumably consider it makes the COMMUNITY look bad. But it DOESN'T. I don't think it even makes individual Jews look bad, rather individual PEOPLE who (not coincidentally obviously) happen to be Jews. Personally I think the use of a slur of that nature is entirely in keeping with the show which is all about a relationship that creates (hilarious) chaotic drama for all the main characters and beyond. And IMO, overall the show paints the Jewish race and (more importantly maybe?) the Jewish religion in a good light. I hope you give it a try and I hope you enjoy. Pro-Tip: the missus and I both thought that maybe Kristen Bell had had some facial work done and it was throwing us a bit in the first couple of episodes. Unsure, (it might just have been the passage of time since The Good Place), but the mild Uncanny Valley effect eventually faded for us which was great.

dys

It deserves to be up there with The Wire for consideration of best television ever made.

dys

Hey Roland, um obviously I'm very familiar with what "shiksa" means. My mom literally is one, as a WASP who married my Jewish dad. I'll give the show a shot and report back.

Roland Cooke

Sounds like it could be rather autobiographical for you, depending on how religious your father / father's family is.

"The implications are a lot bigger" is absolutely a true statement. I love how close we are to the end! I cannot wait another 2 weeks :/ it's cute that you, just like our characters, never even considered that there might be something wrong with the Good Place. there might not be - it might be just that we need 2 episodes to explore it. after all, the Good Place is supposed to be absolutely amazing and we never saw enough of it in Michael's faux Good Place version. I really love all the moments when Jason makes a profound statement or helps one of the others realise something. he's the epitome of the broken clock that is right twice a day :D there is something really charming in those rare moments of his. his actor is absolutely stunning but to me, Jason is only ever attractive in these moments. :D any chance you would consider releasing both ep 12 and 13 together next week? :D

Maria Stoycheva

oh, I would love to hear your thoughts on this - both of you! I loved the first season, even if just due to the insane chemistry between Kristen Bell and Adam Brody (both of which are my teenage crushes and, as a result of this series, current crushes too lol). but the story also raises some going points and demonstrates some difficulties that are present in any tight-knit group, be it religious or otherwise. and it also put the word shiksa in my vocabulary. not sure I am allowed to use it but I plan to only use it about myself, so... :D

Roland Cooke

I guess I was expecting to not enjoy it, and expecting my wife to enjoy it even less (I'm the chick-flicker in our household 🤩). But we gave it a go because of Bell (had never heard of this particular Brody) and were immediately enchanted. The chemistry is really strong, but it's the writing and physical performances of the two leads that really drive this show. I expected to be repelled by dumb / annoying supporting characters, but again the writing and acting of all of the supporting cast really works, (although it took a few episodes for me to shake my mental trope expectations). Yes the supporting characters are (deliberately) dumb and annoying, but they're done so cleverly that it really works. One final comment is that the leads are wealthy residents of Los Angeles and that combination could also easily have been tropey and repellent, but again the show makes those aspects work.

Roland Cooke

I know where you are coming from, but again I'd recommend watching the finale on its own, it really deserves its own space. (Plus it's double length).

Maria Stoycheva

yes yes, I totally agree. if anything, watch it on its own and leave plenty of room for discussion afterwards. there will be a lot to talk about ^^

Jane the Virgin might be fun to react to.

I have heard nothing but praise for Bojack! Calling it one of the best TV shows of all time is a bold statement as well. We have to do it eventually. We are currently deciding what is going to replace TGP and I think you guys are gunna like it.

There's a, possibly apocryphal, story about an experiment with a troop of monkeys kept in a space where they could climb a tree to reach some sweets but the researchers would shower all the monkeys in cold water when they did so. The monkeys soon learned to beat up any monkey trying to climb he tree. And then the scientists started introducing new monkeys who got beaten into understanding they're not supposed to climb that tree, and original monkeys were cycled out. When "no" monkeys remained who had ever experienced the cold showers, they still kept beating anyone who tried to climb the tree, and no monkey ever got to get the sweets. That's the first thing I think about when I hear the words "we've always done it that way."
