Not to get political, but the promised rollback of governmental regulations by the incoming administration makes me worried that more things like this will happen in the future.

The waitress at the restaurant in the beginning of the movie when Erin doesn’t eat, but her kids do, was the real Erin Brockovich. If you go back to that scene, you’ll notice her name tag reads “Julia.” It’s a nice Easter egg.

PG&E is still around. My aunt in Cali was telling me the other day that she sells the electricity from her solar panels back to them. I recall they got into another legal issue when their electric towers started a major wildfire a few years ago.

Erin Brockovich and Traffic both were pretty strong box office performers in 2000, with Erin Brockovich slightly outperforming Traffic when it came to box office popularity. It was a hell of a year for Soderbergh. Brockovich was definitely not a film that went under the radar like many other Oscar films tend to.

Another Aaron Eckhart movie I love is called Possession, released in 2002. Gwenyth Paltrow is the costar. It has an amazing supporting cast. It is a little slow in parts and only gets 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I love it!

Jeff

Erin Brockovich herself has said that the events in the movie are "98% accurate." Apparently George later accused her of having had an affair with Ed and was arrested, I think for extortion. While I'm not the kind of person to judge all corporations as corrupt or "evil", living in California with PG&E has challenged my equanimity. In 2017 some faulty equipment of theirs was responsible for a firestorm that swept through my hometown, destroying more than 5000 homes and businesses in one day. Needless to say, it was a long battle to get them to accept responsibility. They've since made improvements, but all of these harmful decisions they've made over the decades have totally eroded the public trust.

I wonder if you guys would be interested in doing some so bad they're good movies. Obviously The Room is the most well known, but I'd put forward Neil Breen's work as must watch train wrecks.

While I don’t begrudge Julia Roberts the win for Best Actress this year, I wouldn’t say it was a guarantee or undisputed win. It was a strong year, particularly Ellen Burstyn’s performance in Requiem for a Dream. Also nominated were Joan Allen, Juliette Binoche, and Laura Linney. I’d probably have given it to Burstyn, but I’m not angry about Julia’s win.

dys

Apparently so, and that is very worrisome. Tuesday's events could mean the end of any meaningful change for the better from the US on taking care of the environment we all live in.

I love Requiem for a Dream, but I think I'm not alone in saying it's one of the best movies I never want to watch again. It is so good but so brutal and disturbing and heartbreaking I don't want to watch any reaction to it. However I am seriously considering doing a "you pick it, we watch it" for another Aronofsky movie, The Fountain. That movie has flown so far under the radar, nobody saw it, got no recognition from critics, but it's brilliant. It's a movie that on the first watch you think is deep, on the second watch you think you realize is not as deep as it wants to be, but on further watches you realize is even more profound. It's a perfect film, the best performances Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz have given in their careers. Let me know if either of you guys have seen it.

I have been on a project for about 15 years to watch every award nominated movie. Of the ones I’ve seen and I’ve seen a majority Erin Brockovich is my favorite best actress winner. On Golden Pond and Coal Miners Daughter are probably 2 and 3. This movie gets me energized every time I see it and makes me feel I’m not doing enough to fight injustice in my life. In real life Erin has become a bit of a media entity hosting reality shows and she made a tv series called Rebel more loosely based on other stories in her life. Unfortunately it was short lived due to the Covid Hollywood break. I too am curious what the award season will bring this year because I usually have an idea and this year I have no clue.

Jonathan

If this movie made you mad, you should definitely check out Silkwood if you haven’t seen it.

Youtalkingtome

No clue! The end of the year is going to be very interesting. I'm willing to bet, based on what I've heard, Anora is going to do very well.

Youtalkingtome

I watched Requiem one time and I will never watch it again. While brilliant just absolutely draining. Ellen Burstyn is one of my all time favorite actresses. . She is Oscar worthy in that film but my god! The Exorcist should have won her the Oscar or even The Last Picture Show. I know she won for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore but I've never seen it. I know. I'm a huge Scorsese fan and that is one of his only films I've never seen! As far as The Fountain goes, I've never seen it but heard mixed things.

Youtalkingtome

Oh George. PG&E has no love from us. Infuriating. I have no words for the tragedy and harm they have caused.

Youtalkingtome

Interesting! Luca Guadagnino might have a similar year. He directed Challengers earlier this year and has an adaptation of Queer coming later this fall with Daniel Craig. We talked about how there aren't many Oscar contenders so far, these two have very strong chances.

Youtalkingtome

We definitely care. We will not get political but this shouldn't happen to anyone. I don't care what part of the world you live in. The shot of the kids playing in the pool has stuck with me and infuriates me thinking that this isn't fiction...this really happened.

Joy M

I was about to suggest on the West Wing thread that Joe and Kevin should watch The Contender. I didn’t even realize that Joan Allen was nominated for that film until I googled who Julia Roberts was up against.

Joy M

No, there are several unrelated movies with that title. This one is a mystery/romance, not a horror movie

Youtalkingtome

Kevin here. Honestly, I had blocked Requiem out of my brain. Aranofsky really his his peak of unnerving artistry with that one, and that's saying something.

Youtalkingtome

Kevin here. Joe has seen The Room, but I haven't. In fact, not seeing that film has kept me from seeing The Disaster Artist.

The book Possession is even so much better than the movie (and I liked the movie!). It’s a must-read for anyone who likes Victorian literature.

The lanky kid at the water board is also in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar, which is a great movie and he’s very funny in it. This is a pretty decent movie from a legal standpoint! It had just come out before I started law school so at the time everyone was using A Civil Action, which was a book and movie about a corporate water pollution case in New England, for their torts classes. But this one is pretty good.

Also fun fact about Crash - one of its Oscar nominations was for Best Song (it lost to “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp”) for Bird York, who performed her nominated song on the telecast; Bird York is also known as Kathleen York and plays Andy Wyatt on West Wing.

Allison Otto

You know what, I was just thinking about Possession and I think I remembered - isn’t Lena Headey (Cersei on Game of Thrones) in it? Doesn’t she play the companion of Jennifer Ehle (Elizabeth from the Pride and Prejudice miniseries)?

Roland Cooke

Well if you're considering that combo, you should add (the epically bad) Plan 9 From Outer Space and (the excellent) Ed Wood.
