Stranger in a Strange Land

The way the MSAM launch is setup feels very much like a nod to The Martian, won't go into more detail in case you haven't seen it. I have a lot of problems with the whole bombing scene, especially with Molly's death happening offscreen. I would be fine with her dying there with her character arc kinda being over, but you can't just cutaway from her being apparently fine and then have a blink-and-you'll-miss-it newspaper line announcing she died. I also don't understand how the blast was so powerful it took out a big chunk of the building, but Karen and Jimmy being so close to the epicenter weren't just vaporized. I had some nitpicks with the first two seasons but I really had trouble with the basic plausibility of a lot of things this season, it just feels a lot more contrived.

I agree. I still very much enjoyed this season, but some of the bigger swings they took (which they did so well in the first two seasons) felt shoehorned and awkward; this the last season of Game of Thrones, where so much of the action and the character decisions felt unearned. And the presence of a secret North Korean astronaut on Mars felt like a stretch.

It's North Korea - I'm not so sure he DID volunteer for the mission. It seems to me like he'd have a pretty hard time saying no to that order. If you freeze-frame on the newspaper, it has some exposition explaining that Molly sacrificed herself by continually going back in to save more survivors and ultimately dying in the process. I love the idea of that, but I feel like we needed a scene of it actually happening. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it newspaper shot feels like way too off-handed a way to write off such a beloved character.

The episode title comes from Robert Heinlein's famous novel.

Ah. Heinlein is definitely a big influence on the show overall, so this makes sense (the nod of the novel being to Kelly's Martian baby). Nice.

I haven't watched The Martian, but I know the reference. I have read the book, and the glove-puncture propulsion this wasn't in the book and was an addition just for the film. I agree this is much more plausible.

Ryan Fisher

The newspaper describes what happens to that character.
