The Bear and the Maiden

Not being a man, I can’t imagine how much more harrowing that Theon scene was (and as a woman, it’s already pretty harrowing)! Oy, vey. (In answer to your question at the end, there . . . Yup. 😬😵) This episode has me (“The First-Time-Around-Always-Jaime-Hater”) pretty solidly on the Jaime train with you now. He’s risked his life to help Brienne multiple times now. I’ll NEVER forget the terrible things he’s done, but I’m prepared to give him room for a redemption arc and actually be here for it. Jon and Ygritte’s chemistry “eating up the screen” is a great and accurate description! I’d reckon Rose Leslie as Ygritte is giving one of the most unique and interesting performances on the entire show.

As much as we hated Theon for what he did at Winterfell as a Greyjoy, the pendulum is now pushed to the other side... fully. Everything about his storyline in season 3 is gruesome and graphic.

Yannick Denis-Trudel

Weirdly, we could think that Jamie is just now showing his "frosted side", but I think he always had this chivalry in him. We just see it jumping out the screen since we're following his footsteps more closely. But with every layer of his psyche revealed, we just get more and more enticed to him. What a character!

The parts with the guy whose name I think you still don’t know* are among the parts in the show I can never watch. I have to mute the TV while you’re on those scenes 🤣. Absolutely gratuitous. Meanwhile I love so much about the rest of this episode! *not completely sure where this plotline is at because, you know, I can’t watch it

I agree with you that Jaime was never a monster like his son Joffrey, nor was he even heartless like his father (man, what a family !). However unlike you, I think him coming to Brienne's rescue is not something that was always in him, but rather a symptom of real change. The guy used to bang his sister on the regular and had no qualms killing a child to keep that a secret. He certainly always wanted to be chivalrous, but I think he was quite a long way from it. But now, losing his hand, coming so close to death - it has all forced him to take a hard look at himself and the way he's lived his life - and he's found himself wanting, especially compared to Brienne, who is the embodiment of chivalry. At least, that's what I think is spurring him to change his ways.

Yeah, I also had to skip that part - I saw it once already, I don't feel the need to inflict this on myself again ! But I would have to disagree on the gratuitous part - gruesome as they are, I think this and the other Theon scenes clearly serve a purpose, if not several. For one, as Yannick's comment below points out, after everything Theon did in season 2, it was gonna take some serious comeuppance for any of us viewers to feel sorry for him, let alone root for him again. But also, I think with these scenes, just like with some of Joffrey's scenes, the show is trying to say something about the fundamental difference between the 'ordinary' evils of war, with its inevitable lot of violence and death, and the 'true' evil of someone like Theon's tormentor, who inflicts pain not out of necessity, but out of pure sadistic malice. And of course, it offers an opportunity to explore something rarely seen on TV, namely what this level of torture and mutilation does to a man's psyche ; and I don't think Theon's character arc would be quite so compelling if all these horrible things happened to him off-camera.

In the book we're lead to believe Theon is dead this whole time and only pick back up with him after most of the torture stuff has happened "offscreen". Of course logistically they have to keep Alfie Allen around this season or risk him not being available when we do get Theon scenes again, but that means we are subjected to the whole thing which is a little much.

I think Jaime’s character has always been motivated by protecting those he loves (he didn’t push a kid out a window to be evil; he did it to protect Cersei and the children), but when he’s motivated by caring for a good person it spurs him to more selfless deeds as opposed to when he’s motivated by caring for a corrupt person who draws him into corrupt deeds. Not saying he “loves” Brienne in the same way but he does save her because he cares about her (imo) and not just out of like respect for her honor.

I'm really not one for body horror or torture scenes, but that scene was so compelling. All the torture, both of Theon and the TV audience, is mental and implied. (The earlier toe and finger mutilations were far nastier!) Obviously more of Theon's fate will be revealed next episode, but I'm crediting the writers and the (female!) director for creating an amazing scene that is insane and horrific, but mostly gets its rating from some top-shelf female nudity...we don't actually see anything getting sliced! Credit also to Alfie Allen and Iwan Rheon for absolutely nailing their performances, completely believable the both of them.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah Alfie is really brining it this season. I'm really glad we didn't see it but my god that was horrifying!

Youtalkingtome

It's just done so well. This isn't a horror show. It's a drama with moments of insane graphic violence. The fact that they left the final slicing off screen is so disturbing. Your imagination just runs wild.

Youtalkingtome

I totally agree. His character arc has me excited every single week. I still think he's had the single best monologue and scene in the show.

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, I don't hate him anymore. I want him to die but not for the same reasons. Just out of mercy at this point.

Youtalkingtome

Redemption seems to be the theme of this season. Jon and Ygritte are just goals man. As far as Theon goes. That's just horrible

Aude M

Ok. I forgot THAT one episode was not particulary among my favorites XD I think it's probably the next three. This one is too graphic, though it's full of good dialogues who are teaching us things to remember in the future.

“Redemption seems to be the theme of this season”. Also surprising betrothals and amputations — as you say, what a season of TV!
