Joss Whedon was new to this. It had tons of behind the scenes interference… all agree this movie is bad. A few years later the new WB network wanted young innovative talent and Joss had friends there so they offered him a production deal. He chose to try again with this concept as a sequel/remake the execs panicked after how bad the movie was, gave him a shoestring budget. He made something better than expected for the first season and it had an audience so it got a real budget for season 2. Angel is the only spinoff.

I love this movie!! Not as much as the show, obviously, but the movie is hilarious and so fun! I still quote it to this day.

Ah! Thanks! I was pretty sure about Angel, but not the rest. While there are admittedly many cheesy B-movie elements to this movie, it was a great time (certainly a more entertaining film than Mac and Me).

One thing that's fun about Kristy Swanson is that since she started being a vocal trump supporter, people started calling her "Rough Draft Buffy" 😂 Also, Paul Reubens reprised this role in s2 of What We Do in the Shadows! It wasn't officially the character, bc in WWDITS he was just named Paul, but with the makeup and hair, it was clearly meant to be this role

Erica

Yeah, i feel like joss whedon wanted to write a movie that would flip a few tropes on their heads, but the studio wanted a movie that was basically The Lost Boys except silly bc it's about a girl. (i haven't seen the lost boys so im just going by vibes in this assessment 😂)

Erica

But yeah, im really glad you guys liked it! Buffy is such an important show to me, and while i don't think this movie is good, it is part of the extended buffyverse (even though it's not technically canon). The fandom is still huge and thriving, and one of the Podcasts about the show even holds Buffy Prom every year! In 2025 it'll actually be held at Torrance High School in CA, which is where the show was filmed!

I can’t believe this got bad reviews. I was a kid when this came out and I thought it was totally awesome. I remember it being very popular with my age group (the summer before high school). Also I was disappointed when they recast the actress for the show (I got over that of course).

"Detention! ...Detention! ...Detention. ...Detention, Detention." That line pops into my head more than I care to admit.

Alex Lee

"Supernatural was on for like 40 years" lol

We're so glad we could do this. Just an absolute fun movie. I can see myself watching this movie a bunch

Ben Affleck mentioned in an interview once that his acting in this was so bad, that his 1 line in the movie was dubbed over...

Jonathan

I was thinking about this last night and I have a feeling myself and a lot of others would have a different view if we had seen the movie before the show. The silliness would be less jarring.

I'm coming out of my perpetual lurkdom to say that this was a delight and oh my gosh, I would be so beyond thrilled if you guys reacted to the show. You would have then reacted to 4 of my 5 favorite shows! :D

Jamie Morgan

Oh, you guys would LOVE the show! It starts off a little cheap 'n' cheesy (and there's nothing wrong with that!), but it gets really deep and philosophical as it goes on. Given your love of The Good Place, there's no way you wouldn't like it ^_^

I needed a reason to watch the movie sometime... and I still haven't, but I will now. Because I love Buffy the show, as someone who only really watched it on Netflix a decade after it ended. Which in turn I only started watching originally because I loved the stuff Whedon did after Buffy like Firefly, Dollhouse, and the Avengers movies he did.

Sly_Budlong

Ooof I'm as old as this movie 🙃

Y’all haven’t seen Firefly???? OH, DUDE. You gotta do that with us at some point!!

dys

It is a slow start though, and not a slow start like say The Wire season 1 where it is just taking time to slowly set up plot threads that will come together... season 1 of Buffy is almost entirely monster of the week episodes, and full of the most cheesy dated 90s tropes (many of which it invented, to be fair). It isn't until well into the second season that it starts to do more serialized storytelling and become legitimately great. And then some of the seasons after that are some of the finest television ever made.

dys

I'd recommend doing it before Buffy, even. Much as I love Buffy now, I doubt I would have powered through the early seasons if I didn't already utterly love Firefly so much that I was willing to wait for Buffy to get as good as Firefly is from episode 1. Which it does, but it takes about halfway through season 2 to get there. Firefly is an essentially perfect single season of television and a 10/10 movie to wrap up the story. Serenity, the Firefly movie, is the exact opposite of the Buffy movie. Buffy the movie is a highly entertaining but not actually good prototype for a series that still has plenty of camp and comedy but is serious and real and heartbreaking when it needs to be. Firefly the series has camp and comedy too, but is going for even more serious worldbuilding and continuity. And then Serenity the movie is a distillation of all that Firefly the series was into a tight, satisfying conclusion they somehow fit into a single movie for a series that was intended to last multiple seasons. So Buffy the show distilled the few things that were good about Buffy the movie and expanded on them, while Serenity the movie took the many things that were great about Firefly the series and turned them into a perfect thesis of what the show was about.

Finally got around to watching this movie with your reaction, as someone who loved Buffy the show but only watched it later on as well. I got into Whedon's work in an unusual way, I went to see Serenity (the Firefly movie) in theaters without ever having seen the show, and it was immediately one of my favorite movies. So then I watched the one season wonder that is Firefly, and it was immediately one of my favorite shows. Buffy was on TV when I was a teen but it's a hard show to like if you only see bits of an episode every so often. But with how much I loved Firefly, and then Dollhouse (after a slow start), and the Marvel movies he did, I knew I had to watch Buffy. It's actually nuts how much better the production values are on Buffy the show than they are on this movie, and the show already looks cheap especially in the early seasons by modern standards, dramatically so compared to what they did on Firefly only a few years later (which still holds up very well now). But the movie still looks even worse. The monsters in the show are actually threatening, some of them are still cheesy but not like Paul Reubens taking three minutes to die. The show has camp but with characters you actually care about and a story you can take seriously.

I'm thrilled at the prospect of you guys watching the Buffy series. Prior to The West Wing, it was my favorite show. The common theme being smart writing. 2 totally different writers who both wrote smart dialog. Though Buffy season 1 is really cheesy, ultimately it's a really smart series.
