You hadn't seen this movie? Inconceivable!

dys

"He looks like Christopher Lee, doesn't he?" "Mawwiage..."

dys

Whoever told you this was a romantic comedy or a kids movie steered you a bit wrong. It has romance, and is mostly appropriate for kids, but I think it's remembered for the infinitely quotable comedy that works at least as well for adults as for kids.

Toc

.....meanwhile, on top of the great TV shows, you squeeze in a movie. Princess Pride, Year Of Living Dangerously, Network etc. An embarrassment of riches, this channel!

William Goldman's "Adventures in the Screen Trade" is a great book, even for those who aren't interested in filmmaking. This movie was based on a fantasy romance novel that he wrote years earlier in 1973. It's a funny, satirical "metafiction", supposedly based on an older story by the fictional "S. Morgenstern." Goldman makes ongoing commentary to his own story throughout the novel, so they adapted that narrative style into the film by having the grandfather read the story to his grandson. The music was by Mark Knopfler of the band Dire Straits. He also composed the soundtracks for the films "Local Hero" and "Last Exit to Brooklyn." (And, by the way, Dire Straits also created one of my favorite songs ever, "Telegraph Road.")

Before I even see the reaction, I can tell you right off what scene I'm most looking forward to, especially with THESE reactors: the battle of wits scene with Wallace Shawn! 🤣😂

Toc

His soundtrack for "Local Hero" is one of my faves of the 80s. The movie, also. Always trying to get Dawn Marie (scottish reactor) to do that one, but it would be a perfect film on this channel too!

Love this movie! And the book The Princess Bride is even better than the movie. If you ever decide to read it, DO send a request for the missing love scene (if that’s still something the publisher is doing). If they are, there will be instructions on how to do it when you get to the missing section of the book. Totally worth it🙂. PS Whether you watch it on the channel or not, When Harry Met Sally is a movie all y’all should definitely see at some point. Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, Bruno Kirby, and Carrie Fisher are a dynamic and hilarious ensemble.

Jeff

Local Hero is one of my favorites too! I've been listening to that soundtrack for 40 years. I've been planning to pay for Joe and Kevin to watch it; I'll probably do it next month.

I think the magic is that the tone is such that we're all in on the laugh. We know the tropes that are being mocked but they are portrayed, as Joe says while "winking at us" by telling them in a, I don't know, respectful? way - if that makes sense. I get the feeling that they too love knights, love, and adventure but also know that some (most?!?) of the stories/movies of this genre have unrealistic components that we choose to believe and love anyway. So, they are not making fun of the genre - rather, they are acknowledging and laughing with us by taking the tropes to absurdity.

1 vote for "When Harry Met Sally" - a great New Year's Eve holiday movie!!

Also, if you haven't seen, "A Knight's Tale" :directed by Brian Helgeland. With Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany IMBD: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0183790/ - I would recommend that for a future watch when you're in the mood for a period piece with modern music.

There was a line that you missed. After Miracle Max and wife said, “have fun storming the castle.” The wife says, “do you think it’ll work?” And Max responds, “it’ll take a miracle.”

I never thought men noticed other men’s hairdos until I started watching this channel. I find it endearing.

I'm so happy you guys saw this movie. It's one of my favorites, I watched it a ton growing up and loved showing it to my kids. The cast has done some reunions over the years, including a livestreamed read through of the script in 2020 as a fundraiser for the Wisconsin Democratic Party. Cary Elwes also wrote a book about the filming of the movie.

dys

Especially because Rufus Sewell is now starring with Keri Russell in The Diplomat. If you guys like The Americans you are going to love that show.

Alex Lee

When making this movie, Andre was in so much pain from his condition that he could barely move around. You can see in the wide shots of the fight scene with Cary Elwes on his back, that it's not actually him, it's someone wearing an Andre mask. To go from literally throwing big men around a ring to that is so sad.

Oh my friends... what a treat! I love introducing this movie to people. I call it a movie about a grandfather's love... and I still tear up when Peter Falk delivers that line. It is one of my all time favorite movies. BTW Chris Sarandon was known for horror films Fright Night and Childs Play as well as the speaking voice of Jack Skellington in Nightmare Before Christmas (Danny Elfman himself was Jack's singing voice).

the part where buttercup admits to being a silly girl, my mind immediately goes to "better a silly girl with a flower than a silly boy with a horse and a stick."

nj

when harry met sally would be great for new year's. if you haven't already seen it, mixed nuts could be fun for christmas. it's a nora ephron movie, but rob reiner's IN it. it and the ref are my two favorite "christmas movies for people who don't love christmas." (die hard is my favorite christmas movie overall, but i recall at least one of you takes issue with that categorization.)

Glad you guys enjoyed it! I watched it in cinemas when it came out, so it must have had some fanfare, though a lot of the actors are very famous English comedians - Peter Cook and Mel Smith for starters - so it may be that it was bigger over here in the UK? Not sure! I definitely think it has largely stood the test of time, with the possible exception of Buttercup being a bit of a drip! Thanks for watching <3

Just wondering - have you guys wanted either of the two Monty Python movies? If not, that would a great watch. They’re hilarious and classics

Youtalkingtome

It's one of those movies that has been around forever that we just missed! I had only just seen ET 2 years ago

Youtalkingtome

I really do wanna read the book now, I gotta see how different it is. When Harry Met Sally will be watched eventually!

Youtalkingtome

Hey thank you! We absolutely adored this. I bet this was a fun theater experience. I know it's a huge movie and I'm really glad I can finally say I've seen it

Youtalkingtome

I've seen parts of The Life of Brian and I've obviously seen the famous Holy Grail, Black Knight bit. Nothing in it's entirety though

Well the original book was by S. Morgenstern. William Goldman adapted it to remove all the boring stuff, leaving only the exciting bits that you just watched: The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure, The "Good Parts" Version

that girl

1. It's an adventure movie 2. On the subject of Rob Reiner's filmography, my personal favourite is This Is Spinal Tap (also starring Christopher Guest) 3. Chris Sarandon is also known as Susan Sarandon's ex-husband
