I don't think you're being inappropriately hard on Frank, but I do think you're easier on the cops when assuming intentions, or just stuck in a situation where they have to do terrible things to keep their jobs. Edit: I wrote this before I watched the episode. Starting it now. I am really enjoying your reactions.

We definitely don't mean to come across that way; we feel like the show does a great job of showing the ugly reality of the world everyone fins themselves in, and the way they try to navigate it (and many, including the police, fail to make the right choices).

When I was a young man... I am ashamed to say I took advantage of certain situations without understanding the deeper issues. I didn't have noble ulterior motives as Frank Sobotka seems to. I just thought no one was getting hurt and I was in a position to profit. I'm not proud of it. Knowing the things I know now... I'd hope that I would make different choices... but I'm honestly not sure. I was a young man in a borderline desperate situation and the resources I acquired through despicable means helped me to turn a corner in my life. Could I have found another way ? I'm sure I could have... but I didn't and so I don't know. In any case... it makes it impossible for me to condemn the Sobotka's... even Ziggy... screw up that he is... because I've been in those shoes.

How great is it that the pettiness of higher-ups got the case shut down last season, and the pettiness of a higher-up (Valchek) gets the case going this season?

Jonathan

You were so right when you said Frank isn’t a criminal mastermind. Frank is doing what he’s doing because it is the option he has due to what he does for a living. He’s not Stringer who is a career criminal. Frank is a desperate man needing more money than he will ever see legitimately to bribe the Clay Davis’s of the world. I’m sure if he had a choice he wouldn’t want to be involved with the girls but it is either do what the Greek says or give up hope that the port and the lives of everyone that works there will ever get better.

Daniel Lydford

Joe, I hope that cold gets better soon.

Robert Bauman

Agree on Stringer being scummy for moving in on D'Angelo's girlfriend, especially given the fact that he's still free and D is paying for everybody's sins. Between that and the Wallace situation he's not my favorite character at this point

You often comment that Nicky and Ziggy should find another job or something to do. I don't live anywhere near Baltimore, so I don't know the actual state the city was in at the time. However, from watching the show I always had the impression that the city – especially the parts our characters lived in - was on the decline, poor and with few options. I always thought the show was showing that for many in Baltimore the main problem was having few or no options and opportunities in life. While these problems weren’t necessarily identical in effect and solutions, they were to some extent shared by a lot of the characters, especially those that were low income. Also, regarding Stringer selling phone stock. He was right about Nokia and some of the other traditional mobile phone brands. Depending on the actual date of the show, probably around 2003’ish, Nokia are easily down 60% from back then, and some of the other stocks haven’t done that well either. It was in large part thanks to Apple launching the iPhone in 2007, that we have seen such a large market increase and shift away from the mobile phones of back then to smartphones today. He shouldn't have sold the Motorola stock though, it is up like x 10 since then. :D

the decline is so tragic and really is the heart of this season, you have people like mcnulty and his boat captain talking about how their parents used to build ships in what factories now lie abandoned by the water, the checkers guys are drowning and barely getting ships to unload, old timers talking at the bar about how they would even unload grain ships and how bad things are now, frank is desperately trying to do something about it and using dirty money get the canal dredged and the grain peer for his people, it's a whole community's tragedy valcek is a petty slimy fuck but you love to see him put the heat to rawls to get his detail lol you guys have a great ability to pick things up and sure enough you picked up what was about to happen with those drug users

Youtalkingtome

Yeah, it's a way of life that is dying and is desperate. Frank and his son are great examples of the old ways and the new. They are completely different people. Why is Ziggy there? He is completely in the shadow of who is father is. So many interesting themes happening!

Youtalkingtome

Thank you, it's my sinuses from the weather. Allergies and asthma are something I've been dealing with my whole life!

Youtalkingtome

So true, he's desperate. I wonder if we'll find ourselves pulling for Frank in the long run or if he does turn into full villainy

Youtalkingtome

Hey no judgement here. We can't judge someone for their worst moment. If we sound like we're harsh or criticizing, it's strictly in terms of the characters of this fictitious show. We're glad you're here today

This doesn't excuse what Stringer and Donette do, but keep in mind that D'Angelo was cheating on her for all of the first season.

Jonathan

Baltimore was a factory town going back to the 19th century, however 90% of those factories have closed and the port and fishing industries are much smaller too. Today the biggest employer in Baltimore is government jobs but most of those require skills so unless you get into construction or trucking most average blue collar workers have to settle for low paying jobs in restaurants, lawn care etc. This is a big reason why such a large percentage of people in Baltimore support themselves by illegal means.

Ingemar Svensson

I had never spotted it before but this time I noticed Donettes large CD collection. Such a time stamp for the era those CD tower stands.

steve borden

You mean the girlfriend that he was cheating on all last season, and the same one he was going to leave a single mother if he took a deal. Dee showed no loyalty to her, let’s stop acting like Stringer is getting with the love of his life, Dee just knocked her up and was looking for any excuse to get out of the situation

Youtalkingtome

That's a really good point. I honestly don't blame Donette (largely for the reason you mention), but Stringer is out and free because D'Angelo took that bullet for him. Not cool of Stringer at all.

Robert Bauman

These things are not mutually exclusive. D'Angelo is not a great father or significant other and Stringer's actions are also off-putting (also factoring in the Wallace situation into my general assessment of Stringer). Most of the characters in the show are pretty complex and not exactly model human beings by any stretch of the imagination.
