YES!!!!!!! One of my all-time favorite movies!!

Peggy G

Harry Connick Jr. was in Hope Floats with Sandra Bullock - that's the movie you were thinking of, Kevin. 😃

Peggy G

It's a cute movie with a great soundtrack. Put it on a poll someday. 😁

UnKay

Woot! 🙌🏾

This is one of my favorite movies of all time!

One of the most re-watchable and quotable movies💙. You will be shocked—SHOCKED I tell you—at how often you’ll find yourself saying, “….but ‘baby fish mouth’ is sweeping the nation?” in everyday, casual conversation. For some additional levity, The Muppet Show managed to recreate THE scene in Katz’s in a really creative (safe for family) way with Miss Piggy and Billy when Billy Crystal hosted the show. It’s definitely worth hunting it down on YouTube.🤣

Pam Nail

The way Bruno Kirby says "baby fish mouth" and then repeats it even louder, like "That's it! That's the one! I got this!" LMAO

The woman who chimes in to say "i'll have what she's having" when Sally fakes the orgasm while eating at the deli is director Rob Reiner's mother, Estelle....the whole scene was improvised since writer Nora Ephron had Harry and Sally "cerebrally" discussing how women "fake it" and the actors decided to "verbalize" how its done....I smirked when you led off the video by saying "Long Time Coming"

This movie always reminds me of Billy Joel's "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant"

my understanding is the stories from the vignettes with the couples were real stories, but actors stood in for the actual couples for the movie. i actually had days of the week underwear when i was a kid. each pair had a flower drawn front and center below the day of the week written in script. (my cousins' cocker spaniel ate tuesday, which bummed me out because i really liked the daffodil.) i'm pretty sure the set included a sunday pair.

Okay, both of those facts are amazing. 1) I'm glad the stories were real, because they were lovely, and 2) I will be checking out eBay and Amazon later for adult days of the week underwear (as a curiosity only, I promise). REALLY glad there is a Sunday!

I have seen Billy Joel in concert three times (2 of them were with Elton John), and Italian Restaurant is one of my favorites! I'm a sucker for a sax.

Hahahaha! I love when inside joke casting choices are made like that. That's fantastic. Good for Meg Ryan for deciding to go there herself.

I knew you guys would love this movie. I still love Sleepless in Seattle more for various reasons, but this is a top tier movie. It does make you feel great and Nora Ephron was a fantastic writer in this genre in her criminally too short career.

- This is a perfect movie. Great writing, great acting, great everything. - The couples on the couch are actors, but the stories are real. - Another romcom I like with Billy Crystal -- Forget Paris. Lots of great character actors in that one, including John Spencer (playing kind of a dick). - Definitely go to Katz's Deli if you're ever in NYC. The line is long, but they know how to move it along. I'd recommend looking up a video on YouTube on how to order. It can be intimidating. (Also, if you're looking to be in the city for the holidays, the week after Thanksgiving is a good bet. Decorations are up, everyone who came for Thanksgiving has gone home, and the Christmas crowds aren't too crazy yet.)

ScarlettMi

Billy Crystal has at least one other solid rom-com under his belt with "Forget Paris". It's not quite on this level, but there is at least one scene that was so funny I practically hurt myself laughing so hard. If there's only one other Billy Crystal film that you guys react to though, I'd recommend "City Slickers". Fantastic film.

I hope you watch You've Got Mail soon! Another great movie!

Joe, Harry's sweater was an Aran-style cable-braided fisherman’s-rib knitted wool mock-neck sweater. (No, I didn't know this, I had to look it up.) It became iconic after this movie, and you can find sweaters like it everywhere.

THEY CHANGED THE ENDING! Can’t believe no one has mentioned this! Ephron’s original screenplay had the characters NOT ending up together. Rob Reiner fell in love with his wife Michele Singer (on set — she was a friend visiting someone) and got married before the movie was released. They changed the ending to a more romantic one during filming, entirely at Rob Reiner’s suggestion, because he was feeling in a different place than when he pitched the movie to Nora Ephron.

I had to wait until New Year's to watch this because it's a New Year's movie to me but didn't get to finish last night. Cherished 'rom com' imo, inadvertently spurring on the industry, with their watered down, more formulaic versions of the tropes, that this movie, ironically, does everything to subvert. I laughed when you dismissed it in the beginning as some run of the mill rom com, because it is far from it. It's just incredibly well done, and I appreciate them using someone like Billy Crystal, like you said, because the building of romance and romantic relationships is very progressive and tedious ike this, rather than the whirwind fairytale-like extremes that Hollywood sensationalized, among all kinds of people who are not just 'conventionally attractive supermodels'. The most romantic stories are the ones off radar, because they're just out there living it with no need to tell the world lol. Again, completely ironic that Hollywood so flipped the concept based on the slightly more prominent beats of this movie.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I've seen it. Just a delightful film and I can't wait to rewatch it.

Bruno Kirby was also in both When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers! Great actor, gone too soon!

As a kid, I remember those sweaters in the '80s... I don't know if it was a New England thing (I grew up in CT) or a nautical coastal thing, but they are a classic now!

fire12wife

I had those underwear as well! They were my first underwear after I became too old for my Underoos! The '70s had the best stuff!

LOVE the Soundtrack to Hope Floats! It's the only place you will find Trisha Yearwood's version of 'To Make You Feel My Love'!

Another song you can't find anywhere is Garth's When You Come Back to Me Again from the Frequency soundtrack.

fire12wife

You can find all of Garth's music on Amazon Music. He doesn't do business with iTunes. That song has been in a few of Garth's boxed sets, too! LOVE that song... it's about his mother! His youngest daughter Allie who is a singer in her own right, sang the first couple verses of that song, acapella, during an interview for the A&E documentary, Garth Brooks: The Road I'm On. It's a fantastic two-part documentary! You should definitely check it out if you haven't already!
