Part of the slow start to the season as well shows a continuity in the consequences of the previous season. McNulty riding the boat, Daniels in evidence control, Greggs taking a desk job etc. If things had just jumped forward and everyone were magically together again would be too much like a normal procedural where things basically reset for each episode.

I agree. Nothing in the narrative of this show feels forced or unearned, and the great pacing has so much to do with that.

From the cold open to the credits next episode is one of the best! You both are asking good questions and some of your east side inquiries will be answered next week as well. Thank god you guys recognize Method. So many others have no idea, makes me feel so old.

A little bit of geography. Where most of the action in this episode was taking place is in SE Baltimore near the port. 20 years ago that was a very white area because most of the homes were owned by port workers or factory workers back when those jobs were plentiful and well paying. The white drug dealers are mostly all in the same boat as nick and ziggy. Their parents and grandparents built a life there and now these kids are there with no prospects. Because that area was very much like a company town there also is much less other employers or public transportation options in that part of town. The action in season 1 and where stringer now is about 5 miles north of that with Stringer on the west side and Joe on the east.

The guy that was deposing the port workers that made the joke about getting them to say that the Port is near the water was the leader of the homicide squad that David Simon was embedded with for a year. When Barry Levinson and David Simon made the Homicide series they hired him to be their consultant to get the police stuff right. There’s a lot of him in Daniels.

Next week has what could very well be my favorite scene of the show. I’ll let you all figure out what that is.

Good observation about how funny the show is. Would be tough to get through such depressing material otherwise.

I think there's an interesting bit of setting in the house visiting scene you didn't really address - the house they're visiting used to be his aunt's, he probably went there all the time as a kid (when he pauses to look at the chimney, I'm guessing it's maybe the only part he can still recognize after the renovations)... Four years ago the house was in his family and now it's completely unaffordable for him, and probably would be even if he had all the hours at the docks. When you look at the other couple visiting they're in a different social class altogether.

Thank you! That is a really good observation. Another marker of how an honest life in the city is becoming increasingly unattainable for the people who live there.
