I adore this film. Gene Tierney is fabulous, and I love seeing a young Vincent Price. They were in four movies together, "Leave Her to Heaven" being one of them, which is an incredible Technicolor thriller. Gene Tierney gives an outstanding performance.

She was terrific and an absolute stunner! I had never seen one of her films that I can recall. And I had no idea Vincent Price was such a large man!

I'm really glad you enjoyed and appreciated this film. What strikes me the most is Preminger's direction and the amazing lighting throughout. Every shot is so impressive and layered. Here's an intro and outro for the film from Turner Classic Movies: youtube.com/watch?v=bmT0CvH2GRQ

In the 1940s-50s, I think there were (within the standards of that time, of course) two supremely beautiful star actresses tied for first place: Vivien Leigh and Gene Tierney. Tierney just had an aura about her, unearthly almost, that makes her perfect for this particular story. I'm glad Kevin mentioned the score. David Raksin's music is one of the absolute classics among film scores. Interestingly the producers didn't like it when they heard a demo -- they wanted something to promote as a song (as was common then), and they thought it was too complex a melody ever to become a song that anyone would want to sing. They gave Raksin a weekend to prove them wrong, and before the deadline Johnny Mercer wrote a set of lyrics that did the job. It did indeed become a hit song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZObeGXsjqmU

On a different aspect, I have to say that, though I love and adore this movie, and am always happy to watch it again, that has to be the wackiest murder investigation ever (and in Hollywood studio pictures, that's saying something). McPherson brings Lydecker along while he's going the rounds to talk to all the suspects, he settles in at the crime scene like a guest (even drinking her liquor), and on and on. But the preposterousness somehow adds to the special atmosphere for me. Laura is just that good a movie; it works despite everything one can say.
