So was the 60s sitcom really called "My 5 Sons" before it aired and what happened to the kids' mother that made Fred MacMurray a widower and need Uncle Charlie to be a live in caretaker?...curious minds would like to know

This was based on a TRUE notorious 1920s case when a wife and her traveling salesman lover were accused of killing her husband in NYC.

Stanwyck was a "Ziegfiled girl" at age 16 in 1923....so this was "late" in her overall career

There is a 2-year exclusion clause in most life insurance policies to prevent such mischief...also the insurance AGENT would be responsible for SOME "field underwriting" as in disclosing how well he knew the customer and the purpose of the insurance- but its the "home office" underwriter who would perform risk assessment on the medical condition, moral character etc (back then) of the potential insured and beneficiary....

The exclusion clause makes a lot of sense, given the temptation of putting a price tag on a dead person or property.

That's a great question! I just tell him, "I watched Sunset Boulevard last night. You really need to check it out!" And hope for the best.

You know, I'm sure I didn't watch the entire show, but I'm pretty sure I never heard mention of the mother. Maybe MacMurray finally played a murderer who got away with it.
