absolutely excellent pick—this will be fun to follow!

Thanks! I needed a new show to nerd out on now that I'm done with For All Mankind, and this is one I have been wanting to watch for years!

David

Oh man, this is a great pick. Excellent series.

Stephanie Bedworth

This is a surprise. I really enjoyed it when I watched it back when it aired and it actually seems like it would be right up your alley.

Panos

This was a surprising choice. I've been hoping that someone would react to this severely underrated show for a while now.

Mithroch

What a pleasant surprise. Yes, more please!

"Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM". IBM was my first engineering job out of college. When Lee Pace is saying "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" already wasn't true by the early 80s setting of this show, by the time I worked at IBM 10 years ago it was a dying husk of a corporation. Nowadays it's "nobody ever got fired for buying AWS", Amazon Web Services runs most of the modern web.

I watched the first season and most/all of the second. Pretty sure I didn't bother with the third (and fourth). IIRC I was eventually put off by over-drama. But I'll definitely give the show another go, might work better on a second viewing. I have been surprised that Mackenzie Davis hasn't gone on to have a bigger career (though she's done fine, including leading the amazing mini-series Station Eleven).

Mackenzie Davis has become more of a household name since this show (I haven't seen it, but I feel like The Martian gave her a career boost), but you're right. She has flown under the radar. I did watch Station Eleven, and I thought she carried the show well.

Panos

In my opinion it's definitely worth giving it another chance, as this show got better with every season.

How are people watching this show? One of the few streaming services I don't have is AMC+, I don't really want to shell out to buy a new series / subscription when I have a huge backlog of (free to me) other shows already.

Mike Friedman

This show has a pretty good first season (and a lot of fun parallels with real world tech industry of the time) but the writing goes WAY downhill after the first season.

Episode 1 was free on Amazon, not sure what I'll do going forward.

IBM being the only game in town at the time for personal computers is kind of the whole initial premise of the show, so even though this is mostly following real history with fictional characters I won't explain more about what the real-world landscape was at the time because it might actually be a spoiler.

The one thing I ever subscribed to AMC+ for was to use the free trial to watch the absolutely incredible show Pantheon which was an exclusive there (to AMC+, not even AMC the TV channel). Pantheon is another one of the few TV shows that actually get the details about computing right to my experience in that industry. Fortunately Pantheon's first season is now on Netflix and the second season (which was previously only even released on Prime IN AUSTRALIA due to contractual obligation AND NOWHERE ELSE) is coming there soon.

I dunno what it says about my type that I have a thing for both Alyson Hannigan and Mackenzie Davis.

I do think she's close to a household name these days. Her role was one of the best things about Terminator: Dark Fate (which was probably the least bad of the post-T2 sequels, but that's not saying much). But yeah she's still either had smaller roles in successful stuff like The Martian, or more lead roles in less mainstream stuff like Halt and Catch Fire or Station Eleven.

It's so good and got so badly screwed by the network. First only showing on AMC+, then getting cancelled after the second season had completed production, by a miracle the second season got released on *Prime in Australia only* even though AMC wanted to can it because Prime Australia specifically had the rights to show it there. Finally made it to Netflix just recently after being completely scrubbed from all legal platforms for a year. And even with all of that production hell it tells a complete, satisfying story in those two seasons. Incredibly stacked cast: Katie Chang, Paul Dano, Daniel Dae Kim, Aaron Eckhart, William Hurt. It clearly had people in the writers room with backgrounds in computer science, it somehow turns problems I learned from a whiteboard in theory courses into tense dramatic scenes. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I am (just barely!) old enough to have (sorta) been there. In high school I got a summer job working doing admin and on-site repair stuff (I was 17!!) for a couple of years for Compaq. It was great, I learned how to diagnose and change out computer stuff, solder circuits, etc. Good computer build skills I still use today, even if I happily left that work life behind after college. Halt and Catch Fire is one of the best bits of television in a while, absolutely one of AMC's best limited run prestige series. As good as season one is (and it is very good) I would vehemently argue that it GETS BETTER as it goes, and builds to a terrific final season and series conclusion.
