Daniel Lydford

Matthew Perry's character in the show was Joe Quincy. Joe Quimby is the mayor in The Simpsons.

Shawn Ashmore played Iceman in the X-Men movies - his twin brother Aaron is the one driving the car in this episode.

Roland Cooke

Pretty sure the lady in the back of the car sitting behind Iceman's brother, is the cancer painter in The Americans.

Daniel Lydford

Patricia Richardson was indeed the mom on Home Improvement, and an excellent foil for Tim Allen.

> "The day the music died” is a phrase from Don McLean's 1971 song “American Pie” that refers to the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson on February 3, 1959. The crash is considered to have marked the end of the early rock and roll era. The crash occurred when a small plane lost control in poor weather and crashed in a cornfield near Clear Lake, Iowa. The pilot, Roger Peterson, was not qualified to fly in the conditions. McLean's song is about the cultural changes and loss of innocence that occurred after the crash. The song also reflects on the disillusionment of McLean's generation. <

I really like this episode, but what makes me laugh is Josh too busy arguing with Santos to notice he's doing checks on the aircraft. Don't know why, but it tickles me.

I'm so glad you guys loved this episode. The format was fantastic and gave such a great insight into campaigning and each candidate. This episode is one of the reasons I love Senator Vinick so much. Patricia Richardson (who was in Home Improvement) is fantastic in this too. Helen Santos is such a strong character and reminds me so much of Abbey Bartlett which I love.

Next episode, avoid reading the credits until you hear a phone ring, after that, you're clear.

Youtalkingtome

Thank you! I agree, Helen Santos is a terrific character. I'm looking forward to spending more time with the candidates.

Laura Room

Great episode. Teri Polo is perfectly paired with Smitts. I totally buy them as a couple and I like how she pushes him to be a better man.

If you’ve never read it, IMO the best and most fun read about campaigning (albeit in the pre digital age) is All’s Fair - Love, War, and Running for President written by James Carville and Mary Matalin about the Bush/Clinton campaign they were on opposite sides of while dating and getting engaged. Classic stuff about the grueling schedule as well as the nutty way decisions are sometimes made.

My fave episode of the whole show! Lots to love - personal shout out to the Will/Ice cream moment as the weirdest moment on this, or perhaps any show - and also to the sheer chemistry of Santos and Helen. Plus magnificent Josh/Donna yearning and an introduction to Vinick's team. One small thing I like is how intentionally bad the lighting makes Donna look - a subtle hint that she's in the wrong environment. Followed by Russell having to be reminded of who she is like she's a random doner even though she's clearly Will's right hand person. And fun fact - the country of Turkey tried to sue the writers over this episode because they do not have the death penalty and they felt the show had misrepresented their country.

Also - the woman that had cancer in the final season of The Americans was on the Russell team

I love this reaction to this episode cause it's one of my favorites as well! The contrast between each campaign is so telling especially with the candidates and how honest Vinick was at the end. It's why he's one of my favorite Republicans! 🫶🏽

Joshua Molina - BIG prankster on set - a favorite co-worker for a lot of the actors - gets along with everybody. For this one - a lot of conjecture regarding how the song hits the first "desire" as the ice cream bar drops for Will to take back to his room. :) LOL Love this episode too - not sure why it's rated so low on IMDB. Originally airing on January 26, 2005, 'King Corn' is Episode 13 of Season 6 of The West Wing. It is the 124th episode overall and has an IMDB rating of 7.9, placing it as the #15 ranked episode of this season and #83 out of all the episodes shown so far.

Bradley Whitford writes another episode in Season 7 - inside joke for that one we'll cover at that time.

- I'm always disappointed to hear that Hoynes flips on ethanol. Anti-ethanol was *his* issue back when he was VP. There was a whole subplot in season one about it. - Alex Graves, who directed this episode, had Janel Moloney, Bradley Whitford and Alan Alda do their characters' morning routine based on what they do in real life. He was a little embarrassed that he already knew how Alan Alda slept from his Hawkeye days in M*A*S*H.

Youtalkingtome

The morning routines was such a great way to start each characters perspective. Very well directed episode

On the podcast the writer said there was a woman executed there but it had in no way been an officially sanctioned execution - as her notes proved the story had been based on those events and the show doesn't say specifically that the *government* of Turkey did it, they got away with it. As a Brit its weird because Turkey - though I'm sure it has problems- feels more 'European' than the far right Arabic state this implies. It's as odd as them accusing Spain or Germany of it.

My favorite episode of the season, and definitely a top ten episode for the series. “Desire” is one of the best needle drops in the whole series. I feel like the ice cream thing with Will is about how he feels about the campaign. He’s watching the machinery, waiting to see if it breaks and he wasted his money.

The Inedible Mattman!

Like, I get WHY people find these episodes so different from the earlier stuff. I get why some people might prefer the earlier storylines than this one. But man ... this episode shows you exactly why this show just kept chugging along and breaking down obstacles. These characters are iconic, and they have actual character arcs. The growing is the best part!! So glad you guys liked this one. it's a tough one to love unless you "get it". :)
