Nice purchase Cristy! This totally woulda been my vote if it was on the Redford poll lol. Fun cast all around.

Daniel Lydford

I saw this and immediately started digging for my DVD copy.

If Robert Redford asked you to do something, would you be able to say no?

David Strathairn was nominated for Best Actor for playing Edward R. Murrow in George Clooney's Good Night and Good Luck.

Thanks, Cristy. Solid pick.

I still use "Cattle mutilations are up" in polite conversation as often as I can. 😀

There's a new series on Apple called Prime Target. Normally this would be right up my alley. But I'm worried that Sneakers might have pre-ruined it for me... > A post-graduate mathematics student discovers an effort being made to destroy his work in finding a pattern in prime numbers that would allow him to access every computer in the world. <

Funny you should say "Oscar-worthy actors"... Sneakers has the rare distinction that ALL of its top-billed cast, plus the cameo at the end, have been nominated for an acting Academy Award (and in some cases won). That's 8 people: Redford, Poitier, Aykroyd, Phoenix, McDonnell, Strathairn, Kingsley, and Jones. Strathairn was the only exception at the time, but he picked up a nomination later.

I was the one who picked the same movie after Cristy, Joe and Kevin then informed me someone already bought it, haha. Great choice Cristy! This is the first movie I ever bought on video tape as a young teenager. My generation usually sites Hackers (1995) as the hacker movie of their generation, this is mine. It's also very grounded in realistic hacker culture. Some trivia: Professor Len Adleman is one of the three mathematicians who invented the RSA (he's the "A") cryptosystem, currently the preeminent method of encrypting any form of data in the world. Adleman served as a mathematical consultant on this movie, and spent several days constructing the slides Janek (Donal Logue) displays at the college symposium. Whistler (David Strathairn) is patterned after Joe Engressia, a blind telephone expert born with perfect pitch who was one of the original phone phreakers. Lawrence Lasker and Walter F. Parkes were the main writing duo behind this film. They have many great movies to their names including the similarly themed Wargames (1983).

[Discussing the Mission Impossible movie] "Spoilers!" "Eh, it's a thirty-year-old movie" [checks release date of Sneakers]

Thank you for recommending it too, you have great taste! I remember watching it when I was probably too young so didn't understand it all at the time but went back later and rewatched thankfully. Hackers is a brilliant film of its time too now that you mention it. I love all of this trivia, I had no idea!

What an awesome reaction! I had a hunch you'd like it but glad it's confirmed now. I agree, the entire cast has amazing chemistry and dynamics which is why the film works so well. The tension, too, is so good in the movie. Even after watching it so many times and knowing what happens I can still feel it. The humour does surprise you but it works well to diffuse some of that tension. I was waiting to see if you’d pick James Earl Jones' voice and you didn't disappoint, I love his cameo. It's funny to think of Timothy Busfield as a baddie given he’s so lovely as Danny on The West Wing. Also, Kevin, you get bonus points for the bird impersonation and the Leroy Brown singing. Such a great reaction, thanks, guys!

For the record, the ponytail holders are spelled scrunchie. You guys really have me digging out my old dvds lately, the Bourne movies and now Sneakers. I like how lighthearted this is given the serious subject matter. RIP River Phoenix.

I love this movie so much.
