When I had my Welles obsession as a teenager I struggled to get into his post 1940s work as much. His 1940s work though is spectacular Citizen Kane, Magnificent Ambersons (even in it's edited form, against Welles wishes), and the vastly underrated The Stranger (1st Hollywood movie with actual Holocaust footage) are as good a first three movies as any director in history. Of course he ended the decade with a legendary performance in The Third Man.

Don't forget his fantastic performance in "Jane Eyre" (1943), that movie is also incredible Wellesian! :D.

I can't believe my eyes!!!! I'm ordering Chinese food and proceeding right to this one! PS: While we're throwing out titles for Insomnia Cinema: James Cagney in "White Heat"!!!! Oofa! 1949! Wild!

PS: Totally agree about The Stranger, so good.

This film was justifiably famous for it’s opening one-shot. Of course now every hack director with an iphone does the same thing! Oops did that sound old and cranky? 🤷‍♂️

Also as much as I love/enjoy this film, I’m not sure I would use it to represent the greatness of Orson Welles. Perhaps others can chime in on this!
