Yes... that was Tom Hank's mother in Apollo 13... and Ron Howard's mother in real life. Jean Speegle Howard.

- Musetta Vander, who plays bug lady, is South African. Hence the accent. She also played one of the "sirens" in the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou. Kind of a similar role, really. - This is one of the least loved episodes, but I enjoy it for its campiness. I love that we almost immediately veered away from vampires with witches last episode -- witches being a fairly iconic horror monster, one of the biggies (along with zombies, werewolves, etc.) -- and then go in a completely different direction with this one. - I feel like anything specific about the Angel show is a spoiler, even the timeline, so mum's the word on that. - [rot13 for spoilers] V xabj vg'f whfg n srj jrrxf njnl, ohg vg srryf yvxr vg'f SBERIRE hagvy gur "Natry" rcvfbqr. I love how much you guys are letting yourself enjoy and appreciate this show, even when it's campy and goofy. I've seen other reactors (who shall remain nameless), who just frown at the whole thing and just don't get it. As everyone has already said, this show gets better and better. And yes, Charisma Carpenter is her real name.

I remember being disappointed in this episode when I started the show, to me having witches and stuff in a vampire show fit but praying mantis monster was not something I expected. I assume you don't want to know when the Angel spinoff started relative to this show's run.

If aspect ratio is 4:3 on Hulu, then you're good, for now. (Whedon is on record saying 4:3 is absolutely the intended framing throughout the series; any later manipulation is damaging.) After S3, I believe, Hulu uses the non-R1 DVDs which open up framing to widescreen. Only R1 DVDs have intended 4:3 for all seasons. Perhaps by then, like so many of us, you'll love the show so much you acquire the DVDs. :)

BTW, as for Buffy's HD remaster (via all non-Hulu streaming, I think), in case you haven't heard, it is ATROCIOUS and must be avoided. Superb video by Passionofthenerd on Youtube explains it best, but has spoilers so don't watch it. :)

Jonathan

Charisma is her name. Hippie parents.

You guys are really getting the inspiration for season, one more than most reactors have it’s a lot of B-movie mixed with the twilight zone down to the ominous endings.

Even if something is bad (which this is not) I try to recognize the fact that so many people worked on it. No one sets out to make a bad movie or show! I love the campy, cheesiness of this show. The tone is perfect and the lore is actually very interesting! I'm having a blast with it!

Youtalkingtome

We do not wanna know, just speculating! I like that it's switching it up a little. I know we're gunna get back to the main plot with The Master soon, I'm just enjoying it as it goes along

Youtalkingtome

I've seen so many Buffy DVD's at pawn shops and Walmart. I never realized how cool this show actually is!

Youtalkingtome

It's such a good idea for a show. It works as a movie but this is a way better format to tell this story

Erica

I read an interview years ago that she's named after a perfume her mom had. Honestly though, Charisma is a great name for a perfume! 😂

Erica

One of the sillier episodes of the show, but when these episodes pop up, they're usually still fun! Sometimes you gotta just embrace the camp and the silliness. As they say, "The horrors persist, yet I remain silly"

Erica

She was also the sweet librarian from the beginning of Matilda who helped her get a library card (Matilda is one of my comfort movies)

This was a 1950's "The Beginning of the End" / "The Fly" / "Attack of the Giant Gila Monster" episode, and I loved every second of it.

I can think of only 3 episodes that I skip on a rewatch. And none are in the first season. A lot of the ones people pan are enjoyable exactly for the reason you said: they're fun campy interludes.

There is actually a no spoilers episode viewing order list for Buffy and Angel for cross over episodes between the both series and plots where best to stick to one series for a few episodes. You still have a while before you'll need it though!

James B.: Also, all of S1 is important because we're just getting to know our characters, and there are so many great little moments for each of them throughout the season.

Erica

100% agree! As silly as i find "teacher's pet," it's definitely an important ep for getting to know xander
