Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing my request. You guys are on fire with all of these reactions. Can't wait to watch!

Heather

Yay! One of my favorite rom coms!

James B.

My night is set. I guess I'll be watching a man wax poetic about bouquets of sharpened pencils.

Allison O

Cristy you are the MVP! I am so excited for this!

Allison O

So there are two old movies - The Shop Around the Corner (not a musical) and In the Good Old Summertime (Judy Garland musical), as well as the Broadway show She Loves Me, all based on a Hungarian (?) play called Parfumerie, and they all have exactly this plot except with secret pen pals who are also coworkers. So if you knew those movies/show, as soon as you saw the trailer for this you knew exactly what it was going to be - and it’s such a delightful update!

Jonathan

Love this movie but the fact you are seeing this before Sleepless in Seattle is crazy.

Peggy G

Between this movie & When Harry Met Sally, I declare Meg Ryan the goat of tissue acting.

Emma Samuel

Delighted to see you react to this. A real comfort movie for me. This is actually a (loose) retelling of Pride and Prejudice, which is why it's referenced so often. It's one of the reasons why I think the romance arc works so well despite some of the uncomfortable rom-com manipulation. (Also I watched The Godfather decades after this movie, so all my knowledge going in was from the jokes in this....)

Erin Geer

I’ve honestly been waiting for you guys to watch this one. I remember seeing this in theaters when I was 11 and fell in love with it. It’s the movie I put on when I’m in a sad mood and it always cheers me up. The music is also very charming and feels very Nora Ephron-esque. Also a bit of trivia - Tom Hanks is a huge collector of typewriters 😂

Cristy

That was so much fun. It definitely evokes a gamut of emotions from start to finish and, yeah, Joe is definitely an ass at times but the payoff, including his character development, is worth it. Also, as much as I wanted Kathleen to keep her store it wasn't realistic and I love that she gets to pursue her passion for writing kid's books. This is such a comfort watch for me and I love their chemistry, also the supporting cast is just perfect and the soundtrack is one of the best in my opinion. Just a fun watch all round, thanks guys : )

Cristy

Interesting fact: Now Marvel boss Kevin Feige was a production assistant at the time and worked on the set of You’ve Got Mail and one of his responsibilities was teaching Meg, Tom and director Nora Ephron how to use computers and send emails. Meg Ryan got her first computer during the shoot too and all of the cast would correspond by email.

Heather

For a movie about AOL and physical bookstores, it feels surprisingly contemporary.

Cristy

It always cheers me up too. I love the typewriter inclusion and the fact Tom Hanks collects them.

Cristy

Thank you! When it lost that poll I knew the guys still had to see it.

Jonathan

I watched the Godfather about 5 years after this and just tonight realized this was why I knew so much going in.

Jonathan

This was the 3rd of the 3 Hanks/Ryan Rom coms but they did do a 4th movie a remake of the 1943 classic The Human Comedy called Ithaca Tom financed it and Meg directed it and they both have parts in the movie. One of the most faithful remakes I've seen.

Jonathan

Yes that was Edith Bunker. Even after all these years that AOL sign in setup still brings me a little thrill like a journey about to begin. I miss bookstores. Even the Barnes and Nobles near me are gone. A big locally famous bookstore was always part of my Christmas shopping and they had expanded so much it was like a mini department store, but even with that they still couldn't make the rent.

Cristy

Also, a bit off topic, but you mentioned The White Lotus and I think you guys would find it very interesting.

fire12wife

Awesome reaction as always, guys! Seeing this movie only makes me want to watch That Thing You Do! (1996), again! It's definitely one of the most watched movies in our house! My husband loves it, too! Did you guys ever watch the director's cut of that movie? Since the director is Tom Hanks, you know it has to be great! Let me know what you think! Oh, and yes, I agree that Steve Zahn should really be in more things! He's hilarious!

Weird Magic

Steve Zahn was in Season 1 Parker Posey is in Season 3 - first episode came out last week. Agree with Cristy - you two would EAT on White Lotus

I love this one, though it hits me hard because I've spent most of my life working in independent used bookstores. I experienced the closing of one store fifteen years ago, and it was eerily similar to the closing of Kathleen's shop. That scene of the empty shop and her remembering her mother breaks me every time. I now work at two different used bookstores, and while both shops are doing well and have loyal customer bases, we have monthly conversations about how long this can all last. I'm encouraged to see many children reading and getting excited about books, and many of our customers shop with us as an overt protest against Amazon and the corporate book chains. So for now, I do have some hope for the future.

Weird Magic

Remember the Ted Lasso episode that did all the RomComs references? Both that episode (The Strings That Bind US) and this movie opened with Dreams by the Cranberries, and show shops opening, drinking coffee etc. Also - the Bantr dating app that the two characters were on: Rebecca = Bossgirl | Kathleen = Shopgirl Sam = LDN152 | Joe = NY152

Youtalkingtome

I love the push back against some of the corporate cannibalizing of small businesses. When I travel, I always buy a book at an independent bookstore. The one in Denver I referenced (I blanked on the name) was Tattered Cover, and I recommend it for anyone who visits the area.

Youtalkingtome

We have managed to maintain a few local bookstores, but they do okay in the Midwest where we live. I assume that has something to do with the Midwest sensibilities of "Barnes and Noble = coastal elitism."

Youtalkingtome

Right? I spent the entire movie looking at the business conflict through the lens of what we know about corporate America today.

Youtalkingtome

That's great! You really have to contextualize how far we've come with the internet in the last 25 years.

Youtalkingtome

Thanks for putting it on our schedule! I agree, I think (while I certainly pulled for the shop to survive), it was more true to the story that it ultimately failed. Just a beautiful movie.

Youtalkingtome

It's crazy, because the scene where Kathleen closed her shop was brutal, and I thought this was a terribly depressing movie. Man, what a wonderful journey to rebuilding and happiness by the end!

Ingemar Svensson

That's not Molly Parker. It's Veanne Cox. She was the snooty lawyer with two wrong feet and ugly shoes in Erin Brockovich.

fire12wife

It is! There's more to the story... I'm surprised they didn't keep it all in the theatrical release!

Erin Geer

I always tear up at the closing of her shop and that part was depressing but it ends on a happy note. I have wondered if in an alternate reality Joe and her reopen it?

fire12wife

Oh, and in case you didn't look it up after... 'You've Got Mail' came out in 1998! Another awesome movie from that time is Armageddon (1998) Have either of you seen it? It stars Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, Ben Affleck, and Billy Bob Thornton. After discovering that an asteroid the size of Texas will impact the Earth in eighteen days. NASA recruits a misfit team of deep-core drillers to save the planet! If it hits Earth, nothing and no one would survive... not even bacteria! Such a great movie! You would love it! I don't usually watch action like this, but this movie has SO much heart in it! Not to mention great music! Liv got her father (Steven Tyler) and the rest of Aerosmith to record the theme song to the movie, 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing'! It's Aerosmith's first and only #1 song! A few other Aerosmith songs are on the soundtrack, too!! Love it!!! You guys don't want to miss this one!

Actuarial Lurker

There are SOME local bookstores out in The Hamptons on Long Island and down by NYU in The Village in Manhattan.... near where Don Draper was living in Season 4 after his divorce and near where Joan lived in Mad Men (by 14th street). There STILL is a Strand Bookstore near the Seaport in Manhattan that has multiple floors of books. It is HUGE but independently owned since the 1920s.

fire12wife

Grace's hand on the screen breaks me every time! Aerosmith's video for the theme song has Steven Tyler on the screen while her hand is on it! Such a great movie!

fire12wife

I found it on Amazon... you have to pay to rent it, even with Amazon Prime, but I checked all the other streaming services and they didn't have it! Just happy I found it at all! I'm going to watch it tonight with my husband. Thanks for telling us about Ithaca (2015)!

fire12wife

What about Turner & Hooch (1989)? Have you guys seen that one?

Clare Manion

Hello! I love this movie and have seen it more times than I care to admit - I'm so glad you guys enjoyed it! If you get a chance sometime, check out "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940), which this movie is based on. The cafe scene in particular - much of it is the same, sometimes line-for-line, which makes for a really fun comparison. Cheers!

Joy M

Tattered Cover is the store in Denver. There are a few around town and one in the airport.

Play Monday’s mini crossword on the NYT app.

There are still children’s story time days at my local library. Just a few weeks ago my sister arranged for a local children’s book author to read her book to my nephew’s nursery school class. So, it still happens.

Just Lily

Maybe you can checkout The Shop Around the Corner (1940) some day on one of your sleepless nights🙂

Kristi Govertsen

Sweet two-second callback to Waiting for Guffman!🙂 If more people burst into songs from Red, White, and Blaine, the world would be a better place IMHO. ❤️🤍💙 It’s been forever since I’ve seen You’ve Got Mail, but I loved it back in the day, and it was so much fun to rewatch it. If may be so bold, it was *almost* as much fun as playing with My Dinner With Andre action figures.

Kristi Govertsen

I promise I won’t tell anyone about the thriceness. (I know it’s not a word, but it should totally be a word). 👽👽👽

Michelle

Having been reminded of all the great Pride and Prejudice references in this I would love to see you guys react to the 2005 P&P film. It's so visually and artistically stunning and feels like it could have just been made. Maybe you could consider it for her 250th birthday this year?
