What a wonderful film! So glad to see this reaction.

Well, hell. I keep wanting to drop a movie request purchase on you guys, but I was gonna request Diner...and someone else beat me to it. And then I was thinking about Out of Sight...and someone requested that one too! And so then I was thinking "OK, then either Breaking Away or *****...." and here you've gone and done Breaking Away. So I guess you've sorted this out for me! This is easily one of my favorite movies, ever.

As an IU alum I love that you guys watched this. Brings back a lot of great memories of Bloomington and campus. Thanks

Jim Miller

The swimming scenes were at a local former stone quarry that has been filled in, of which there were a few. By the time I got to school they had been closed to the public for insurance purposes. Im not saying I havent been to one.

The Little 500 bike races are still billed as the greatest college weekend. Many an amazing story has been told about those weekends.

Oh, this is one of my parents' favorite movies that I've only seen once. I'll have to check out the reaction later.

The last time I saw this was in the theater 46 years ago. I was 12 years old, and I'd ridden my street bike to the theater. I was so pumped up after the movie that I flew home, pedaling as fast as humanly possible (or so I believed). I'm so pleased (and relieved) to see that it still holds up after all these years.

I can't believe I hadn't seen this before - I used to work for a bike company that was a sponsor of the Little 500... But I'm glad I saw it now. What a fun movie! And I definitely wasn't expecting that much opera in a sports movie, but it totally works. Plus, the fact he named the cat Fellini is hilarious and perfect.

Peter Yates's directing career is a real rollercoaster with some great films...and some absolute clunkers. But the guy who filmed the amazing car chase in Bullitt absolutely knew how to film the action scene in the bike race.

I went through the Dennis Quaid filmography and I've seen 9 even though I haven't seen the ones most people have.

The list of titles this community picks is pretty fantastic. I've had some of my ideas picked too but there are plenty more on the list.

Dennis Christopher is a favorite actor of Tarantino and his last well known film was Django Unchained. Naming The cat Fellini was after the director, who gave Dennis Christopher his big break. They attempted to make a prequel to this movie as a television series, but it was delayed by the 1980 writer strike and canceled halfway through the first season. only a few of the actors came back for the series.

I worked with the guy playing the dad on a film. He plays a variety of this character on many of his long list of roles but is very likable.

It's weird! I've always been aware of him as a celebrity but I haven't really been exposed to his filmography

Jonathan

The movie was filmed in a old Time small town near the water, and he kept joking with Director Garry Marshall, that he was going to go take a day off and enter a fishing competition. Garry kept saying he better win so he had money to pay for the delay in production

Youtalkingtome

Oh my gosh! I just looked up stills of him in the film. Of course that's him! He still has the same smile!

Separated at birth: Dennis Christopher, Michael Cera, and Beck.

Oh, and some fun trivia: the late Steve Tesich (a great screenwriter gone too soon) based Dave's character on his own frat buddy at IU, a guy named Dave Blase. Blase was also an Italian cycling enthusiast, and in the 1962 Little 500 rode 139 of the 200 laps and won for his frat. Blase plays the trackside racing announcer in the movie. Also: a cool cast reunion here. Paul Dooley (the dad) is still with us, btw: 97 years young. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foZ_YEF4N1s

Another IU alum here! In fact they were filming this movie while I was doing my grad studies there! I could have been an extra in fact -- they sent out a big call for people to fill up the stadium during the final bike race. And I, like an idiot, thought "A movie made in Bloomington Indiana? how good could it be? and didn't bother. If you look really hard at the background in that sequence (but who could take their eyes off the exciting bike action?), you can see that the stands are far from full, and they even had to move people around they changed angles. (And the girl singing the national anthem was one of my music students.) I did see one scene being filmed. One night walking home to my apartment, I could see them across the street doing the serenade outside the sorority house. Back in those days, everyone went to the abandoned limestone quarries in the summer to hang out. (But it being the 70s, skinny dipping was the standard then....)

No way! That's amazing. It looked like such a beautiful campus. I would kill to be on a movie set. Any fun stories from when they were there?
