This episode has the first instance of sarah Michelle Gellar showing off her amazing face acting. Her tears are some of the most effective in the business. Between her and Alyson Hannigan, you might have the 2 best cryers of the 90s

- 3rd Rock started the year before this and 10 Things was still a couple of years away. But yes, that kid looks uncannily like JGL. - This episode was definitely a take on Nightmare on Elm Street (most closely the second movie, I think, where Freddy uses Jessie to come into the real world). - I don't think the fandom has EVER forgiven Hank Summers for that scene with Buffy. What a cruel way to be introduced to a character! - I've had a variation on Willow's nightmare many many times in my life.

You're not the only reactors to wonder if this is Joseph. It's a pretty common thing for reactors bring up.

For years I thought it was. It took watching reactions to straighten me out.

There's a theory that Xander's fear of Nazi's because his best friend, Willow, is Jewish. I can see a middle school Xander absolutely getting freaked out. We've already seen that Xander's very protective of Willow, like at the end of The Pack after he got unpossesed and immediately went to save her from the zookeeper... The scene with Buffy's dad is so gut punching. The way he just so flipplantly and blantantly says everything is brutal lol. I imagine that note's a very relatable nightmare for kids with divorced parents... A lot of people think it's Joseph Gordon Lovitt but you're right, he'd be too old. JGL was already a teenager by this point. Halloween H20 came out in '98 and he was in the beginning of that scene. This kid was Jeremy Foley. He was in Dante's Peak. He voiced Casper in some late 90s animated videos and games. He definitely looks a lot like JGL, so you're not dumb lol... Giles' fear of Buffy dying 😢. I mean, he's sending off a teenager to fight vampires, demons, and all sort of monsters and potentially die. And they most likely would develop an attachment, and that's an even more added weight on him. He's responsible for this young girl's survival and like he told her at the end of 1x05, he pushes her because he knows what she'll have to face and go up against... I love that brought Willow's stage fright from just the previous episode The Puppet Show, except this time it's singing. Singing Opera in a auditorium full of people. As someone with stage fright, absolutely not lol... Billy getting beat down and left in a parking lot by his own little league coach is diabolical, but disturbingly realistic. Like Xander said, he was surprised it wasn't one of the parents. The way some of these parents act about their children's sports activity is actually insane. Like the infamous story from the early 90s of the mom in Texas trying to put hit on a 13 year old girl and her mother tontry and ensure her own daughter made the high school cheerleader team. I remember reading that the officers said that they told her that she was being charge for soliciting capital murder, she didn't even react... I think part of the reason some of the were making weird choices like Willow going into the basement after hear a whispering voice and Xander following the trail of candy bars was because they were sorta in a dream(nightmare) state where sometimes doing stuff doesn't make sense... Cordelia lol... Unfortunate Behind the Scenes: Sarah Michelle Gellar actually has a fear of being buried alive so her reaction is actually real. I believe she had told Joss or someone that she didn't want to do the scene, so they were supposed . Unfortunately, there seemed to be some sort of miscommunication because she ended up having to do it anyways. She begged them to not make her do it but she ended up having to do it, and said it was a traumatizing situation for her after hours of filming the scene... This is definitely one of the fan faves of season 1. No only is it fun, but we'll done. It even provides some character death and learning about some of their fears...

I very much agree with you on the dream scenarios. Nobody makes rational decisions in dreams, so why would Willow or Xander?

I thought it was JGL for the longest time. Both 3rd Rock and Buffy were 1996.

That young actor looks so much like JGL it's difficult not to think that was him. I was also thinking of the movie Mysterious Skin, where JGL plays a teen who was abused by his Little League coach as a kid so it blurs things even more. Another enjoyable episode. Season 1 is a bit janky but you can already tell that all the elements are there to make something truly special. It just needs time and a bigger budget.

Did you post the Ep. 9 reaction? Can't find it

She kind of got a reputation as "just" a scream queen, but she's an incredible actress. I'm sure the audience is supposed to recognize immediately that what her dad is saying isn't real, and it's even kinda funny how ridiculous he is, but it's completely real to Buffy and Gellar really sells how devastated she is. You guys commented in the first episode about this being an upgrade in lead actress from the movie and I was thinking... just wait.

This episode, in hindsight, is incredibly important to the show. There's actually a HUGE spoiler for Willow hidden in plain sight in the lyrics of the opera that's being sung (don't look it up if you don't know it!), and it sets up a lot of themes/ideas/events that will be brought back over the course of the series. And I'm not even scared of clowns, but watching Xander punch one was still incredibly cathartic XD

It's very on brand for this show to smack you in the face with a huge plot point...but only if you speak fluent Italian or you're a megafan of Madame Butterfly haha!

I've never seen anyone guffaw so hard at Sarah Michelle Gellar crying. It was jarring. Whether or not it's "real," it's real to Buffy, and she's suffering in front of you.

I watched this 6 days ago with you guys. And yet it was not until this morning I woke up with a fully formed thought in my head; If Giles was unable to read during this episode, how did he read Buffy's name on her gravestone? 😅
