This is one of my Gilmore "comfort" episodes; excited to watch this reaction!

capricornmom

oooh ive been waiting for this ep!

I dont know what it is, but i really love episodes like this where there is some big event where a bunch of characters who normally dont interact much get to be seen together. Whether its a cozy holiday event like this or a big storm forcing people to shelter together, there is something nice about seeing all the characters together. I love Richard's monologue at the end, its such an accurate and heartfelt way to talk about quitting a job and how cathartic it can be, but its also so sweet to see him apologize so sincerely to Emily. Emily is such an amazing character, because in so many ways she is unlikable, but she is also so intelligent, has a rapier wit, and is capable of incredible grace when she isn't being defensive. I am glad y'all like her as much as I do.

Youtalkingtome

I agree. This was a wonderful episode for Emily and Richard. This was the most vulnerable we have seen him on the show, and Emily was incredibly supportive of him afterwards. Just beautiful.

capricornmom

okay but in this instance i do support jess' vandalism bc it was SWEET vandalism lmao

When you guys finish this series I think we should get a video of you duetting the theme song at karaoke. I say this lovingly, this episode cracks me up with how no one has any idea what historical period this is supposed to be. It’s all ye olde English, right? 🤣 Like others I also love how all these characters that don’t usually interact are all in one place - it’s like the Muppet Family Christmas of Gilmore episodes. And it manages to advance a lot of character plot lines while basically being a bottle episode where nothing really “happens”. I really like how the episode indirectly acknowledges that even though they’re wealthy and probably fine, Emily is from a generation that’s particularly vulnerable, having relied her whole life on her husband providing for them. She doesn’t have her own money and she doesn’t have a lot of financial agency, and that’s scary regardless of how comfortable they are. Instead of telling her to blow on it, from now on I’m going to tell my toddler that her food is hot, so proceed daintily.

I think it was also a great episode for Lorelai being able to have and express a lot of insight and empathy for them, and I do think she influenced Emily to see it from Richard’s point of view.

Don't worry, Rory has faults and makes big mistakes as she grows up (as one does lol)-- you're absolutely right that her character early on is pretty faultless, though, and I do think her being such a goody-two-shoes (not in a negative way) is somewhat an overcorrection to her mother's mistakes -- she's the responsible one because Lorelai has her own arrested development

Youtalkingtome

I sing this song now more than any theme song, which is saying something. "I will follow...any-whe-yi-yere!"

Youtalkingtome

For sure, right? This would make for a really weird show if Rory goes from 16 to her early 20's without ever making a major youthful error in judgement.

Joy M

I had a boyfriend during the original run of GG who used to mock the theme song all the time. It cracked me up to hear you guys are stuck on it.

Joy M

I’m not giving anything away, but I have two words for you “water aerobics.”

Peter

Babies are horribly ugly, particularly compared to puppies or kittens. Or giraffes.

Peter

"People have too much stuff" says the woman who literally owns a junk shop...

Peter

Paris overhearing that conversation between Lorelai and Miss Patty is hilarious. She had such a look on her face...

Peter

Rory liked Dean because he was safe and she would always be in control. While she is attracted to Jess because Jess challenges her intellectually and pushes her outside of her comfort zones.

Peter

Emily is the best, most complex character on the show. Emily's central flaw is that she has this ingrained notion of propriety that she will not abandon. Ultimately it always comes back to "if you get pregnant, you get married." The world and rules that she has dedicated her entire life to was a prison for Lorelai and she can not understand why Lorelai would choose to rebel, would, in fact, basically choose poverty over the life of (conditional) privilege Emily offered her.

Oceanflower

Interesting to hear you be so focused on Jess' delinquency. Personally at least, I'm more interested in the morality of his actions than the legality of them.

Youtalkingtome

It's not the legality of them at all, really. It's that his crimes all have victims that bums me out. If he was smoking weed or breaking curfew, I wouldn't care. But his actions always hurt someone else. That's a bummer.

Youtalkingtome

She definitely has a real struggle to let things go when she feels her sense of decorum has been breached.

AlecSinWonderland

I HATE Jess. I don’t care how cute he is. I don’t care how smart he is, I don’t think he is anyhow. He’s a brat and little weasel. He’s a jerk and I can’t stand him

Oh Jess and Luke's relationship is actually one of my faves; it's just so good and they're both so loyal to each other. This is one of my favorites of the entire series. The dinner aspect, the little moments with Rory and Paris, Rory and Jess, and the whole Richard/Emily storyline. Dean's jealousy is so grating even when some of it is justified but it just how he deals with it is one of his worst character flaws. Rory has MANY faults/flawed moments; she just doesn't get to the majority of them until a bit... later... in the series; let's just say that.

Youtalkingtome

The fact that the characters do have flaws makes the show so believable to me. I don't think there is anything really like this show

Youtalkingtome

Everyone is so mixed on him. He is truly a love or hate character. I don't think we've seen nearly enough of him yet.

Luíza Fernandes

I love how you guys immediately understood why Jess was acting out - he's been rejected by his mom once again. It's like he's repeating the exact behavior that made his mom send him away, but Luke won't do the same. In a sense, Jess's mom also abandoned Luke - he mentioned in a previous episode how she left him and his sick father behind after they lost their mom. Neither Luke nor Jess are great communicators but I think they do understand each other in a way most of the town aren't able to. I also like Jess questioning Rory about her relationship with Dean and the fact they don't seem to have that much in common. You don't have to in order to have a good relationship but honestly, if Rory's into books and movies and music, and Dean's into sports and monster truck rallies, what *do* they talk about? 😂😂

Luíza Fernandes

You can understand why everyone loves this episode when you see Taylor Doose, the guy who held a town meeting to complain about his lettuce losses from Jess's prank, telling Richard Gilmore that insurance people are boring. The entire cast together is just a delight

The Inedible Mattman!

There is so much to love in this episode, but for me the best part is the tenderness you see between Emily and Richard. This is one of those episodes (like the one with Richard in the hospital) where you can see how much they absolutely love each other. Also, and probably more importantly, this episode highlights the citizens of stars hollow. You get a sense of who Bootsy is, more about Kirk, more about the general townsfolk and their connections to each other. Truly this is an amazing town of characters and I love these episodes that let them shine

The Inedible Mattman!

Is it? She makes a living selling the stuff to others. She looks down on them for having too much, but knows people well enough to profit off them. To me, Mama Kim is just about the most honest character in the show. She sees people for who they are and does what she does best … manipulates them.

Luíza Fernandes

Last comment: Paris DOES NOT speak Portuguese. That was awful pronunciation!

Roland

Without victims there wouldn't be enough impact, enough (potential) consequence.
