I was just thinking about calling it a night when I came across this reaction. One of my favorite movies as a kid. I guess I won’t be going to sleep after all. Pressing play in 1, 2 ……

Oh my heavens! You guys are killing it with some of my faves! This is officially the gayest non-gay movie ever. Hope you find it amusing! Rosalind Russell at her best!

I love this movie - Rosalind Russell is absolutely fantastic! Super talented actress who can knock it out of the park with both physical comedy and lightning-fast dialogue. She's also wonderful in His Girl Friday and The Women. Also, I know this is a minor note, but towards the beginning it was mentioned that all movie soundtracks kind of sound the same now -- right?! It's such a loss.

The director of the movie also directed the Broadway show—I don’t think he did that many films. My friend and I quote so many of the lines back and forth to each other all the time. I hope no one took offense to my calling it a gay movie — it just has a certain sensibility that gay men of a certain age (ahem) loved. I rewatch this movie every time it plays on TCM. Love it! So glad you enjoyed it!

It was a thrill to be the one to introduce you guys to your first Rosalind Russell film. One of my favorite actors of all time! So glad you enjoyed it. Most of her other films are just as much fun to watch. His Girl Friday (1940); Gypsy (1962); and The Women (1939) are my favorites. "The Women" features an all female cast with no men seen or heard in the film. Even the pets are all female. Auntie Mame was nominated for several Oscars, but won none. It lost Best Picture to "The Bridge on the River Kwai". Rosalind Russell was nominated for Best Actress for Auntie Mame, but lost to Susan Hayward that year. Orry-Kelly did the costumes, but was not nominated (he did win several other Oscars though).

I recommend purchasing this on a streaming service. My copy is from iTunes. This is one of those feel good films to watch late at night. Thoroughly enjoyed watching you two react to this iconic film.

This film was based on a Broadway play (starring Rosalind Russell), which was based on one of the best-selling American novels of the 20th century. The author was Patrick Dennis (which was a pseudonym for Edward Everett Tanner III). He married a woman and had a family, but was bisexual and led a fairly secret double life. Years later he left writing and enjoyed a new career as a butler, at one time working for Ray Kroc, the CEO of McDonald's. Kroc only learned much later that his butler had been the famous Patrick Dennis who had written "Auntie Mame." Eight years after this film, a musical version just called "Mame" made it to the Broadway stage, starring Angela Lansbury. The play made her a superstar and earned her a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress. It was a huge success, and eight years after that it was adapted into a movie starring Lucille Ball (Lansbury was passed over for the role, calling it one of her "bitterest disappointments".) The movie flopped, mostly because Ball wasn't right for the role.

When I told someone we were watching this, she assumed we meant the Lucille Ball film. I honestly can't imagine her in this role now.

Oh my gosh! One of my favorite movies. Roz Russell is a treasure. She was Rose in Gypsy (Bette Midler's version is more popular but Roz was the original). She's great in His Girl Friday with Cary Grant. Have you all seen her in The Women? It's a fantastic golden age Hollywood movie with only women in the movie but it's about their relationships with men and she's a card. It's with Rosalind Russell, Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Joan Fontaine, and the underrated Paulette Goddard.
