What a great movie! And yes, I think comparing it to Forest Gump, at least structurally, is spot on. Although of course this swung even further between extremes of comedy and tragedy...and the tragic parts were brutal. A while back I read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and while I don't think that particular event was in the movie here (?), it covers a lot of similar things. Easily one of the most heartbreaking things I ever read. Loved the commentary at the end about empathy, American mythology, and the importance of art - that was fantastic! Also, a minor note from the intro - Mike Nichols - Did you happen to read the biography on him that came out a couple years ago? Really good - I couldn't put it down.

Hope you liked it, guys! And yeah, Chief Dan George's performance in this film was revelatory (he got a Best Supporting Actor nomination out of this). And that line about there being an endless supply of the White Man, but a limited supply of Human Beings always hits like a ton of bricks. The age makeup was indeed by the legendary Dick Smith, who is considered the king of New Hollywood makeup artists -- his most famous work was for The Exorcist. And yeah, the 1876 presidential election was just a mess and totally up for grabs and there's evidence to suggest (and it's the subject of heated historical debate) that he wanted the nomination.

That's how I recognized Dick Smith, love The Exorcist. This film was beautiful and I think it's safe to say underrated. The fact that we were largely unaware of it is telling. More people should talk about this film. Easily one of the best of the 70s.

I have not! I haven't seen many of his films. I'm obsessed with The Graduate and I really hope we get the opportunity to do Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? I was involved with a stage production of it in college but have never seen the film!
