And how do you choose what to watch?

The book series was mostly the first of a slew of dystopian young adult novels, of which Divergent was one. Someone on YT (I think Broey Deschanel?) made a good overview of that trend. I do think it brought YA fiction (which was the most innovative genre there for a good while don't @ me) in interesting new territory.

YA fiction was dominating the box office for a few years. That was a decade ago. Movies have changed so much since then.

One thing you gotta remember, is that for Haymitch to be a mentor he won the games before so he has that trauma of having killed a bunch of kids and then he had to meet a pair of kids every year since then and watch them die... 😖

I do think you guys should read the books. The movies are...fine. Not explicitly offensive if i remember correctly. But the books are a great look at class war, revolt, totalitarian governments...not at all relevant to today's society 👀

The class disparity even within the districts isn't really touched on much. When you're 12 they put your name in once, and it stays forever, the next year they add 2 more (for a total of 3) and so on. But you can sign up to have your nsme added more to get your family a bit more food per month (grains, oil, and salt mostly, nothing too good). There's a bit in the books where the mayor of district 12's daughter gives her the mockingjay pin, and during this conversation she says that she has as much a chance of being chosen as they do, but she obviously doesn't. The capital wants the mayor on their side so of course they're provided for, even if they're not super rich. So they have obviously never had to add their name extra times. And the capital has such incredible firepower and military strength, while the districts have nothing but peacekeeper forces provided by the capital, and weapons lile guns or bows and arrows are incredibly illegal, punishable by death if i remember correctly. A great set of books, if you read, id recommend the Unspoiled podcast along with, where Natasha (who's read the books) reads them with RoShawn (who hasnt). They're a great listen! https://pca.st/podcast/c7a96dd0-3df5-013c-f6d1-0acc26574db2
