Soooo glad you guys did this. One of my favorites! This movie has everything. Comedy, drama, science, great music, visually stunning 🤩 fastest click ever!!!

Yannick, from Montréal

I'm sooo happy you both enjoyed it as much as I thought you would. It's such a great movie, and you guys really got into it! The tonality (humour), the soundtrack, the sound mix, the VFX, the practical effects and the use of a body double (not CGI) when Watney had the emaciated body, or puny (not sure if I'm using the correct terms here? In french it would be émacié, or chétif...) Amazing! Now it's time to plan on another request... I'm thinking Arrival from Denis Villeneuve (they confirmed to me they haven't see it yet!) What does the Patreon community think of this choice? I may not be able to push the spending before end of August though (being Canadian, it's a little bit more expensive than in USD), but I think they really should see that movie rather sooner than later. Lemme know p.s. We could almost say that Sean Bean's character career "died" when he got canned after the mission ended ;-)

Denis Villeneuve's Arrival is a great choice! My degree is in Linguistics, and that movie has the most accurate depiction of how to go about 'field studies' I've ever seen in a movie... Not that it comes up much, lol.

Ridley Scott directed this movie 36 years after he directed Alien (which is almost as long as I've been alive). For anyone who thinks Scott has at all declined or slowed down or lost a step as a director, I submit this film. He has made a bunch of mediocre-to-bad movies along the way but that isn't because he hit a peak years ago, he's just a director who will make an incredible film if you give him a good script (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster, or The Martian we're watching now) or a bad but well directed and visually interesting film if he has a bad script (for example, all the Alien sequels he directed). I see no sign of a decline in his ability as a director so far even now that he's in his 80s.

This is just a really excellent adaptation of a good novel too. I think you know a book was adapted to film especially well (which very rarely happens) when a longtime fan of the book like me didn't even notice on my first viewing that the movie cut out big chunks of the story, because the movie *got* what actually mattered in the story so well.

The Andy Weir novel set on the moon, Artemis, was generally not as well liked as The Martian. I didn't like it that much either. His next novel was Project Hail Mary and that's the next one in the works to get a movie with Ryan Gosling attached, and I loved that book too and I'm excited to see how it's adapted to film.

I gotta say Damon as my desert island pick easily above Leo. Matt Damon is a quintessential leading man but even so much of what you've watched of his work on this channel shows his range as a character actor, I mean Ripley? That's pure character actor. He's just so charismatic when he's a leading man that I get why you would classify him as such, but he's a total chameleon in so many other roles. True Grit, Oppenheimer, The Good Shepherd, Interstellar, these are all radically different roles that Damon completely disappeared into.

They actually filmed this movie in the deserts of Jordan for the exterior shots and then Hungary for interior and the training grounds

You're so right. I personally think Leo is our greatest actor. At least who is working today. Matt Damon is right there as well.

I love Ridley, one of my favorite directors. However I think he is very hit or miss. House of Gucci, Exodus Gods and Kings, Napoleon, and Gladiator 2. All of those films being very lackluster. However I do admire him for his Directors Cuts. The Directors Cut of Kingdom of Heaven is an absolute masterpiece and one of his best films.

The thing with Matt Damon's filmography is that beyond just his main projects -- you have his cameos. I don't think anyone does better cameos than Matt Damon. If you know, you know... even if Scotty doesn't.

I also read the book before I saw the movie, and I thought it was a great adaptation. The humor was there in the book too-- Commander Lewis' disco music, and "Mark Watney, Space Pirate" for example are both straight out of the book. The only important thing that I felt was omitted in the movie was that Mark didn't only use Martian soil and human excrement to grow the potatoes. In the book, Mark also had some soil from Earth that they were using for experiments. Earth soil contains microbes that are necessary for plant growth. And it was those microbes that were killed when the soil was exposed that meant he couldn't grow more potatoes. Omitting that detail raises the question why he couldn't grow more potatoes by just using more of his own poop.

Great point. We were told that there is a director's cut as well. I wonder if they share that detail in it.

I love this movie *so* much. I'm friends with a few theoretical physicists as well as someone that workes on Mars Curiosity. I've also been a repeat volunteer at the World Science festival. When I realized the character was unburying Pathfinder...I almost cried. (I am among those with an emotional attachment to rovers...) I loved that this brought so much science to the table including things like the base-16 hexidecimal system. (It operates on just 16 symbols, 0-9 and 6 alphabetic characters.) This movie was beautiful, as accurate to the science as a movie can possibly be and so well acted that it will go down as a classic.
