Julie Taymor was perhaps best known for her stage adaptation of The Lion King. She won Tonys for her direction and costume design. You can see her touch in this film especially with the puppets and set pieces.

A friend of mine turned to me after watching this movie and jokingly said, “did you know Paul McCartney was in another band BEFORE Wings?!?”

As a theatre kid I have to add, Julie Taymor is third best known for her legendarily disastrous attempt to make Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark, a 2011 broadway musical that has gone down as the most expensive to produce, est $75 Million (they usually cost $5-15), having the most preview performances (182) before official opening because they kept reworking it, AND causing the injury of 6 different performers. Bono and The Edge wrote the book for it and were the ones to bring the project to Taymor. She eventually got pushed out after all the injuries and media attention (they got destroyed by the late night comedians and even the theatre critics published reviews based on the first previews, refusing to delay any longer). It's all we could talk about in drama school. An infamous pop culture moment in a long line of expensive, over-bloated superhero media. Disney acquired Marvel in the midst of this but did not get involved. All that being said Taymor has continued on to direct for stage and screen, but certainly hasn’t had the same hype as she did surrounding this film, which for the record, I love.

I remember hearing about Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark. I think even South Park did an episode making fun of it. I've never actually seen it. I would like to read more about it or at least see some behind the scenes photos. She's crazy talented and this movie was amazing.

Definitely legendary. The stage adaptation of The Lion King is something that I've always wanted to see.
