Brilliant reaction! Always super interesting to see which filmmakers you guys get excited about. (And great choice, Lola!) Would be interesting to do a follow-up now for digital cameras vs. cell phone footage. Film vs. digital – It’s funny, my first job out of college was for a medical device company, specifically to do with medical imaging. At first, there was a big to-do about training the software to see what oncologists saw on CT scans. And now, of course, the software (digital) has pretty well caught up...for better or worse. “Is that ‘Manhattan’ or ‘Annie Hall’?” – Manhattan. But of all Woody Allen films, I’m not sure that’s the one I’d concentrate on. Cinematographically, sure. Otherwise, perhaps not. On which note – just for future reference – have you guys seen ‘Hannah and Her Sisters’? It’s one of my favorite fall-time watches.

This was really interesting. I was not aware of this film so thanks for choosing it Lola. Because you guys were unaware of the George Lucas connection to Pixar I am assuming you haven't seen the series "Icons Unearthed: Star Wars," which I think you would enjoy. It's 6 episodes that discuss making the first 6 movies. It's available on Prime. (There's also an "Icons Unearthed: James Bond" that Joe might like. It has 6 episodes as well.)

I would absolutely watch both of those. I love Bond more than any other franchise and I do love Star Wars...it's just fallen so far from grace. (Yes, we will eventually do Andor)

I haven't seen a single Woody Allen film. It's one of my biggest blind spots. I've seen clips from Midnight in Paris but have never seen a full film.

I knew you'd both geek out! I saw this when it came out (it's funny, despite being the project of an European director, it's practically unknown here), and it was fascinating to watch it again now that many of the predictions have become fact. Some things that jumped at me this time: - Hey, Joe, I also hate Harmony Korine! I had to suffer through Gummo at a festival and have never forgiven him. Can I join your club? - Hearing you both talk about Lucas, I kept thinking he should have been a DP. He'd have been so happy nerding out on tech, and letting others write. Star Wars is a painful fandom to be in. Thank God for Andor (and Last Jedi! I love how it blows up the persnickety lore). - How incredibly amazing is Anne V. Coates!? What an absolute legend. She was able to learn new technologies and new ways of working, while carrying over all her wisdom and knowledge. I think her advice struck me as most important: because I had an analog childhood but an online adulthood (I was born in 1977, my mom was actually watching Star Wars when she went into labour!), what she said about computers making you hurry more and being glad that she learned to train her brain in analog really stuck with me this time. There's something valuable in learning the pure craftsmanship before breaking rules. - I also had to smile when I saw the Wachowskis talking about how the shared experience of cinema would be done virtually, because here we are, all of us, sharing a movie across continents! I also kept thinking we need an update on all of this after the AI craze dies down (I'm firmly in the camp that it is theft and stunts creativity; I'm a translator and I have had bumps with AI in my profession, I have horror stories to tell). Ultimately, my favorite thing about the documentary is that it captures a moment of flux, a snapshot of an unfinished process in time. Because so often we get told the story of how everything changed once it's over and the conclusion is drawn, so the narrative is neat and linear, but this is great in how ambivalent it still is. Glad you enjoyed it!

Really enjoyed this and yes, Harmony Korrine should not be allowed to make movies lolol. George Lucas is still a legend. He is responsible for many things that I love but also just goes way too far sometimes
