Too late for me to start this one tonight but *yes* I so wanted to say when you announced you were moving these to Thursdays but still posting a Tuesday episode this week that it meant you would get to this episode tonight. This is kind of the peak of big budget TV, doing something on the level of the Normandy landing in Saving Private Ryan or Helm's Deep in LOTR for a full episode of TV. I still think seasons 5 and 6 are a step down in quality overall from seasons 3 and 4, but I've said before they still have some of the best individual episodes of the series and this is THE example of that.

Can't believe you're watching peak Game of Thrones and peak West Wing at the same time. :D This episode definitely had some of the best battle footage I've seen anywhere. They gave us not just the most incredible action sequence of Jon standing in front of the cavalry charge and then being surrounded by total chaos, they also made me literally feel like I was suffocating when the pikes closed in around them. And of course the payoff is epic. I've never been happier to see a man get throat-punched by the edge of a shield. IMO that was even more satisfying than Joffrey. And the Stark banner hangs at Winterfell again! It's been a minute. I loved Sansa's face watching Jon, Tormund, and the giant going after Ramsay. They show us how just how badass Jon is by showing her realizing it in real time.

Personally... I'm not as much of fan of the battle. Not because it doesn't look good... but because it's terribly conceived. Yeah, yeah... the writers aren't medieval military tacticians... I get it. It just bugs me is all. Still the pay off is great and worth the price of admission.

"Don't run in a straight line, unlike what Ricon did" is now part of pop culture... But what an intro to that battle!

Having the Stark banner floating again in Winterfell is an amazing image! And look for the Intro credits next week, it will reflect it... We told you to look at the intro every episode, they DO matter!

I'm also here primarily for GoT and TWW (and their awesome comments on many movies and series, don't worry!), and it's sooooo true that we're going to have a great summer and fall with them.

Small detail I loved. The shield Jon picks up at the end is a Mormont shield. There were only 62 mormonts on that field. Jon would arguable have died for a second time if they hadn’t been there and in this show I don’t chalk anything up to coincidence.

That little smile from Sansa at the end as she’s walking away. 💜 She saved the day by making the executive decision that demanding Baelish’s help was an unfortunate necessity. The fact that she has, actually, learned a lot of lessons about Playing The Game is what makes her so cool, IMO.

The unfolding of the Battle of the Bastards is inspired by one of the most famous battles of the ancient world, Hannibal's* total destruction of a significantly larger Roman army at Cannae on the Italian mainland. *the guy with the elephants, not the cannibal The battle of Cannae is regarded as one of the greatest tactical feats in military history and one of the worst defeats in Roman history, and it cemented Hannibal's reputation as one of antiquity's greatest tacticians. The so-called double envelopment does what it says on the tin, the enemy force is lapped on both sides and eventually fully surrounded at the rear as well. What the Battle of the Bastards ably demonstrates is that the majority of the surrounded Romans probably died from suffocation, as their fellows tried to avoid the spears and swords of the enemy. But there was plenty of actual killing (stabbing and slicing) as well, thousands of men every hour. General Schwarzkopf gave a nod to Hannibal when he tried something similar during the Gulf War. Schwarzkopf had a massive advantage in military might, whereas Hannibal was actually outgunned on the day. Instead, Hannibal's brilliance was being able to use the enemy's strength to his own advantage. There's a 60-second visual of how it happened here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Noh6pK5iag And there's a full video animation / history lesson of the battle here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gObVeaEzklM

I wish that were the case, because God knows Sansa deserves her moment in the sun ; but sadly if you take the time to think about it, this plotline is full of holes. The moment Sansa decided to call on Baelish's help, why didn't she inform anyone ? Jon and Ser Davos only decided to attack because they didn't think they had any other options ; if they had known about the Knights of the Vale, they could have coordinated and many lives could have been spared. Jon nearly died - and many men did die - because of Sansa's course of action. Still a visually stunning episode mind you, but it's best to sit back, enjoy the action and not think about the plot too hard.
