Ok. So. I have a very good story. I was at DragonCon in Atlanta. Peter S Beagle, who wrote the book and screenplay was attending. I sat in on a viewing of this movie with Beagle in possession of the remote. He'd pause the movie and tell stories about the actors and artists...and one moment will always stand out to me: He said that Christopher Lee loved his character so much that he assured Beagle that, should there ever be a live action version of this movie, and Lee has "passed on" that he would return from the dead to reprise the role. After telling this story, Beagle chuckled and said, "I believe him." 😁

This story is so great. Unicorns were always more fearsome, more powerful, more dangerous than the Red Bull. However it required a unicorn who would regret not fighting the bull, as opposed to simply acquiesce to their own fear.

Peter

Peter S. Beagle's publisher, Connor Cochran, attempted to steal the royalties owed to Beagle for what is one of the most famous and best selling fantasy novels of all time. Beagle sued him, but sixteen hours before the trial began Cochran declared bankruptcy. Which threw the rights to The Last Unicorn into limbo from 2015 to 2021. Eventually Beagle was able to get the full rights back. Interestingly, the studio that made the movie, the one you just watch, started welching on contractually owed royalties. So Beagle also had to sue them in 2003. Gotta feel really bad. The guy wrote a seminal work of fantasy and everyone had their hand in the till except him.

My pettiest reason for loving this movie is that it is about a unicorn and dragons are barely in it. I am thoroughly over dragons. They've been so overused in the last 20-ish years. Unicorns are used to infrequently that this (and Legend, and the very recent Death of a Unicorn, and some My Little Ponies) are the only uses of them.

Peter

I hope after watching this you are now unicorn guys.

I love that you watched this...but it just killed me back when I was 12. I have to see if I have it in me to revisit this movie.

I saw this movie in the theater when I was 7 years old! It was my first time going to the movie theater! The red bull scared the crap out of my 6-year-old sister and I! We were much older before we would watch it again! lol! I went to a drive-in for the first time that same year to see E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)! All five of us kids were in the back of our station wagon with pillows, blankets, and a huge bag of popcorn for us to share. I'm sure more popcorn got spilled than got eaten! When they showed the Reece's Pieces in the movie, my dad surprised us with our own little bags. The candy was made for E.T., so it was brand new to everyone!

I would LOVE to have this soundtrack, but it was never released in the US, only in Germany! You can get the theme song 'The Last Unicorn' by America on iTunes. It's on their 'Best of America' album. The Soundtrack King, Kenny Loggins, does a great version of the theme song, which you can also get on iTunes. It's on his 'Return to Pooh Corner' album! My father and I are both singers and musicians, and he played the Kenny Loggins version all the time while I was growing up. It's my favorite, I have to say! I just looked into getting a copy of the German soundtrack and discovered they are finally releasing one in English on Christmas Day, 2025! The 7-year-old girl in me is jumping up and down, and screaming!!! You guys were right about Mia Farrow not singing... Katie Irving sang Mia's songs. Jeff Bridges, however, did sing all of his! You can't mistake a voice like that! Oh, and yes, Crazy Heart was the movie you were thinking of!

Joe, there were VCR fights at our house every day after school... my sister and I always had to watch Annie (1982), and my brother always watched Star Wars (1979)! My brother still hates Annie to this day! I thought it was hilarious when he had 2 daughters who loved watching it and singing all of the songs! For my birthday last year, hell must have frozen over, because my brother gave me a vinyl copy of the Annie soundtrack! lol!

1. That's amazing! 2. Christopher Lee lived such a fascinating life. He has been in so many franchises that I love!

So the band America does a great job with the original songs here, but how would you rank bands named for places in America overall? For me has to be your local boys Kansas... Carry on Wayward Son, Journey From Mariabronn, love me some Kansas. Second place is Boston, and not even because I'm from Massachusetts, I've never even lived in Boston proper, I just love Smokin' and Foreplay/Long TIme.
