I was always a fan of Roger Ebert’s reviews (I used to live in Chicago), and I remember how much he championed this film when it came out.

Yay! I can’t wait to watch this later tonight!

I’m feeling super proud of myself for not immediately writing a correcting comment at the start of the video. It was an act of extreme self-discipline but some how I actually waited all the way to the end of the video. LOL I’m so glad someone recommended this movie to you guys. It was in my top 5 for 2003 and it’s one of those movies I treasured coming across back when I actually worked at a video store.

Great pick Aaron! I was lucky enough to see Whale Rider's world premiere at the Toronto Intl Film Fest in 2002. My friend Joe picked it from the festival's "Discovery" program (it wasn't even one of of their big galas that year). It was definitely a bit of a dark horse. Standing ovation for the cast who all attended and it won the People's Choice Award at TIFF. It's still one of my favorite films of all time. ❤️

Keisha’s performance is remarkable in this, but the actress portraying the grandmother is so underrated. Her performance shatters my heart and makes me cry every time I watch the scene where Pai is taken by the whale. It never feels like anybody in the cast is “acting”, they all feel like real people.

New Zealand is in the exact antipodean point of Spain (I remember when Google Earth first came out, I did the thing of checking where I would appear if I dug a hole through the planet right under my apartment, and it was a green field near Mahoe). I loved this movie. I loved to see all the training for the Haka tradition, the inside of the Marae, the (very very little) Te Reo Māori I could understand. My family is from a sea town in Galicia, in the Atlantic, where I always spend the Summer, and seeing the Pacific, and the relationship to it, the way people live in it, is so incredibly different. Ours is always contentious. I loved how detailed and authentic all the details were: the homes, the clothes, the moko, the school costumes that weren't fancy... Keisha Castle Hughes deserves all of the awards. Her performance at the school function was so incredible. I loved getting this glimpse from the literal other side of the world, and learning so much.

From what little I know, unfortunately Keisha Castle Hughes didn't have the career she deserved. As it often happens with kid performers, and much more with kid performers of color (see also Quvenzané Wallis, or the kids from Slumdog Millionaire), the industry doesn't have support beyond the set.

One of the greats. Love the sound of the water after she jumps into the ocean after her grandfathers artifact.

Every scene in this movie is emotionally layered, emotionally charged, and beautifully shot. It lays out what it’s about in the first 10 minutes, and then spends the rest of the time exploring those dynamics in incredible depth. What a wonderful time this film is!
