The 90s were a different time, but nowadays a friend of mine who has celiac disease (so not just gluten free for fad reasons, it can be life threatening for her) has plenty of options in Chinatown in NYC. I don't think I would be into a partner who is averse to something like exploring dim sum in Chinatown like Bill Pullman's character is, but he's still a great guy and I really hope that somewhere offscreen after the movie ends he finds his person. For the tsunami threat last night, fortunately nothing actually ended up reaching the US west coast, but Seattle is actually way more inland and protected than you would think. It's not like LA or SF that could have been hit if a tsunami happened, a tsunami would have to travel 100 miles from the Pacific into the Salish Sea and then somehow pass a bunch of barrier islands and peninsulas far into the Puget Sound to reach Seattle. Earthquakes are a real risk for Seattle but from what I've read tsunamis are not.

It’s worth noting here Nora Ephron is a big reason both Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks did 2 romcoms together because they liked her writing and working with her as director

At the end of the movie, the subway probably would be faster than a taxi, but this was still the 90s where the movies just showed people taking taxis in New York instead of the subway because the subway had a really bad reputation at that time. So movies that wanted to show the grungy side of the city at that time showed the subwy, movies like this that wanted to play up the romance used taxis.

More recently, with less people on the subway during COVID it did start feeling less safe again for a little bit. One of the things I love about living in NYC is everybody takes the subway here, including the richest Wall Street traders, including me making a decent living as an engineer, including bankers, chefs, waiters, CTOs, public service workers...

I love that you guys loved it, this is one of those films where they have great chemistry- even though they spend about 10minutes together in the film! Haha also loving the gilmore girl references, oh Rory

My Grandma has celiac as well. Gluten sensitivity runs in the family, but I will eat bread for as long as I can! He was a great guy and I really believe that he will be okay.

Y’all are such good guys, most men I know would have mocked this movie.

Hey, so cool that you reacted to this! I watched it at the time, and remember very little, just some night time radio sequence...:) Excited to rewatch with you guys. .:)

Yasemin

Haha! Great Lorelai impression there. :)

Have you guys watched French Kiss? Very sweet, and also with Meg Ryan. Could be a great film to react to as well.

I’m so glad the two of you enjoyed this as much as you did. I had just moved to Washington State when this film came out. Eventually moved to Seattle and even bought a lakeside condo similar to his. That was actually Lake Union that the houseboat was on. Ironically, now I’m living about an hour north of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Another place referenced in the film. Anyway, the two of you always seem to react to my favorite films. The only one so far that you didn’t seem to enjoy as much as me was Witness.
