I quite like this episode. I think it's really funny and a lesson-learned kind of episode. Xander is a character that pisses me off more than not and V fgvyy jvyy arire sbetvir uvz trggvat njnl jvgu gung "Jvyybj fnlf xvpx uvf nff" yvr sebz gur frnfba svanyr. However, in this instance, I think it's more an eye rolling "oh Xander" moment than being really pissed at him. Mostly because his goal wasn't even to make Cordelia be with him, it was just to get to be the one to break up with her. It's shitty and short-sighted and he was in the wrong to do it, but I find it a little easier to forgive him in this scenario than I would if he was trying to force her back together with him. The one thing I really wish we could change was just leaving it at Buffy being moved by what Xander had said, rather than her and the show feeling the need to pat him on the back for not taking advantage of her. It's a small tweak but I'd rather we just take it for granted that would be the bare minimum. Then again, it's 20+ years later and maybe we do need to reinforce that message again and again.

To me, either way (force Cordy to be with Xander or to break her heart) is really cruel. But the 2nd thing absolutely yes! Pisses me off that that show has Buffy giving Xander kudos for not r*ping her.

While I love Angelus, I agree re: SMG. I'll add that she's the actor she was/is while also being/doing/dealing with all the pressures and responsibilities that come with being number 1 on a call sheet. In an era back then of extreme, brutal on-set hours. On a toxic set. And at such a young age (age 20 when this episode originally aired). Just incredible.

And the Buffy hours were even worse that what was standard at the time. If I remember correctly, between 12 and 16 hours for set days were common on Buffy.

Willow with an axe, epic. 🤩🤩

I’m so conflicted about Buffy praising Xander for refusing her advances. On one hand, she is praising him for not assaulting her which is weird. But also buffy knows that she’s Xander’s dream girl, and when she was made vulnerable by the love spell and threw herself at Xander he protected her and didn’t take advantage, unlike many other men. She knew it was torture for Xander because his dream came true but it was wrong to play along. She probably felt bad for Xander because of the tease effect of his spell, having to reject the girl of your dreams because of morals. Also I’m sure she’s sadly aware that many other men would have failed where Xander succeeded. And she’s greatful. Should we praise acts which are expected anyway. Does doing the right thing deserve applause?

The spell also works on some of the guys. Presumably, the gay and bi guys. When Xander struts down the hall some guys are angry at him because their girlfriends are looking at him, but some guys look at him as the girls do. Then Angelus remarks how he feels very close to Xander and he’s never felt it before. 🧐

I still have trouble seeing Scott Evil whenever Oz appears onscreen. 🙂

Yeah, after Xander's gay panic moment the previous episode, I'm glad that some of the guys were checking him out, too. Maybe he can see what it feels like when he does it to girls.

That's exactly where I stand. Xander really loses me when he coerces Amy to cast the spell (really, dude? Blackmail and manipulation?), he does stop himself short of crossing a line it would have been too easy for him to cross. I give him credit because, as you said, so many guys would have absolutely taken advantage of that. But it definitely isn't medal-worthy that he finally did the right thing.

A common refrain for Buffy reactors: "I like Xander here." ...and then three minutes later... "Nevermind."

I love this episode, there's so much packed into it it feels more like a movie than an episode of TV. I always forget Spike makes an appearance here lol! My one big gripe with it is how sinister they made Xander when he's blackmailing Amy. I wish they'd made him look way more pathetic for doing that, but they dialled up the evil juuuust a bit too much, and that really does colour the rest of the episode. I guess they were trying to hammer home that what he was doing was wrong, but like...we know that, and even if it was downplayed Giles then makes it VERY clear what the stakes are. Also, hard disagree on Boreanaz! Honestly, I was never fully sold on Buffy and Angel's romance - like you said, the only time I ever get invested is when SMG is pulling out the big acting guns - but watching him be someone completely different and clearly having a whale of a time doing it, PLUS interacting with people outside of Buffy, is so refreshing and fun for me. But I'm looking at it with the perspective of someone who has watched both Buffy and Angel multiple times, I expect my opinion was different the first time I watched this!

Oh yes, saying anything negative about Angel ever for any reason will attract QUICK and HARSH censure from certain sects of the fandom. This means so much to them, and they are not playing around. Reasoned arguments soon give way to name-calling, it's not ideal.
