I have the opposite experience of Joe with this movie, this is another one of the "not aimed at tween or teen boy" movies my mom ASKED me to watch as a kid (you guys have been watching a lot of my parents' favorite movies lately); I was probably 15 or 16 when this came out on VHS so there wasn't an issue of being too young for it.

Thanks, Erica! I haven't seen this movie in ages so it's great to rewatch with the guys. I do love a Penny Marshall film. I like the pacing and also the way they do the transitions from past to present. What a great cast too. Brittany Murphy impersonating Lorraine Bracco is a fave moment of mine, lol. She's so good in this (RIP to such a talented actress). Jason is Adam Garcia who's an Australian actor (since you asked). He's a trained tap dancer too and his breakout movie Bootmen is fun. I don't know how you watched this and The Bear episode at once, that is a lot of dysfunction in one day, lol.

Just logged in and saw your latest download. I think I’ve seen this. Not sure though. The movie you’re thinking about with Natalie Portman & the Walmart baby is, Where the Heart Is. That’s a movie I have in my collection. It’s one of those films to watch late at night.

I didn't expect it would hit Joe this hard, now I wouldn't compare my experience with it to yours. Randomly a lot of Connecticut content today between this, Jenna's Connecticut thing in 30 Rock, and (as always) Gilmore Girls. Being from Massachusetts I'm obligated to hate on all things CT (half joking), and nowadays living in NYC that means CT to me is just the couple hours on the train between home and visiting my folks in MA. But great movie, I'd only seen it once before over 20 years ago and I had a lot more appreciation for it this time.

Fun fact: Adam Garcia was 2 years older than Drew Barrymore when she was playing his mother 😂 I like this movie just bc of how nuanced everything is. Beverly's father could have been kinder to her, but he did support her in his own ways - offering to help ray get clean, helping them get into public housing, taking care of jason (for example, bringing the extra coat and scarf when they were throwing the snowballs) and trying to guide beverly and ray to a path that would make jason's life better. Beverly said some things to jason that i would categorize as things you should never say to your child. And trying to set jason on the path she wanted for herself is so frustrating to me. Also, i think she doesn't quite understand that a gesture doesn't usually make a great gift, especially not to a child. That said, i do think she did the best she could, despite not having the resources she needed (emotionally or monetarily). Beverly and her dad aren't good or bad people, they're just people trying their best, and i think this movie did a great job showing it! The only person who doesn't have nuance is Beverly's mom, who is just an angel of a person with all the help she gave to them. Thanks for watching!

I have to ask, have you guys seen dirty dancing??? Parts of that movie remind me of parts of this movie and vice versa, even though they're incredibly different most of the time. Im broke now, but if you guys haven't seen it and someone reading this was thinking of commissioning a movie...well, just putting the idea out there 😂

i like how the film covered her complete lack of options as a pregnant woman/girl and the patriarchal standard of getting married as a solution which if anything caused her more problems

Thank you so much! I really enjoyed all the character dynamics and honestly a super realistic portrayal of a situation like this. I think this film is completely unique

Never saw this until now: Steve Zahn was acclaimed at release and I see why...while Barrymore got mixed reviews. I think she was "OK" but was overshadowed by Zahn. In real life I see that the author (since this was autobiographical) went to college and grad school....

When I got into my twenties, I became very appreciative that my addict father stayed out of my life, for the most part. The few times he did pop back up it was usually short, chaotic, and traumatic but thankfully, those didn't happen often. He was my dad and a part of me was always going to love him, but I didn't like him and we had almost no relationship to speak of. I think I was better off for that.

It really is tragic, but I have some similar experiences and you're right. It's healthier sometimes just to avoid that toxicity altogether.

Another great reaction! I am so glad you guys enjoyed this one. I have loved this movie ever since I saw it in theaters. I was 11 at the time and just fell in love with it. So good!

I feel like the little kid who plays Jason is actually the little kid version of Patrick Fugit's character in Almost Famous so it was funny that you guys mentioned that! I haven't seen this movie in ages since I was a teenager but it's a delight seeing it now after having had a little boy of my own because yeah... parenthood... can be joyous but it's not all rainbows and fairy dust and this does a great job of being real.
