I need this feel good movie after They Shoot Horses Dont They? I worked at a movie theater in my hometown for 6 years in my early twenties and let me tell you about the frenzy this movie created. I'm from Quebec so all the movies were either quebecois films, dubbed american movies or every now and then we'd get a french film that had seen a lot of success. That was the case with this one. I'm telling you this movie had more attendance than even the Avengers movie. Sold out for weeks and kept playing for months. I think it was the perfect mix of a good movie that got great word-of-mouth and that matched our usual audience perfectly (mostly older people). I still remember the seas of old people asking me when the theater would be open for the next presentation. Anyway, great movie I've been meaning to rewatch.

Oh, one of my favorite movies, seeing this pop up just reaffirms why I'm subbed. Great reactions, great community.

Gentlemen- glad to share this with you and your fellow subscribers. As noted its based on a true story. Phiippe was a French businessman who was the second son of VERY old money (a French noble family dating back to the aristocracy of the 1500s). He became disabled in 1993 in a paragliding accident at age 42 and attempted suicide after his accident by purposefully entangling his oxygen lines. He passed away in 2023 at age 72 after remarrying and having kids as shown in the ending credits. Driss is based on his Algerian caretaker Abdel Sellou. As you eventually saw this was Paris- and there was and IS a continuing massive income inequality problem with immigrants who have fled Africa and live in the Paris slums. As in the US it has given rise to the Far Right party led by Marine Le Pen which is trying to stop immigration, cut social services etc. As in Camus' time, the lower classes are heavily non-White with many from former colonies like Algiers. My wife and I saw this in theaters on first release and was popular enough to play in a Cineplex Odeon 16 where we saw it. It was nominated for seven Cesar Awards (the French National film equivalent to the Oscars or the UK's BAFTA) Sy won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Driss becoming the first Black French actor to do so. Francois Cluzet, the actor portraying Philippe, had previosuly won the Cesar Award in 2007 after being nominated more than TEN times for either Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor in the 1980s through the 2010s and is still active. He was part of the cast of US director Robert Altman's film Pret-a-Porter (which I have NOT seen). The Intouchables was his biggest role. He dated and married the actress who played Phillipe's correspondence love in this film, Narjiss Slaoui, whom he had met prior to filming.

The prior post was getting long: Anne Le Ny is the actress who played Philippe's older personal secretary, Yvonne- she was nominated for the Best Supporting actress Cesar for this film but lost. Audrey Fieurot is the actress playing Philippe's redheaded assistant that Driss kept hitting on. This was the top grossing film in France for 10 straight weeks in late 2011/2012 and set a record (since broken) of the highest grossing French film grossing over $166M locally and $444M worldwide after topping tyhe box office in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Spain and Belgium. It was written and directed by the team Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache who have collborated with Omar Sy on other films since

Adding to Actuarial Lurker great résumé : The film is from 2011. François Cluzet (Philippe) : well-established actor, big career, very talented. He was the biggest name in this movie. Even the directors (Nakache & Toledano) were not really famous yet (except maybe for Those Happy Days (Nos Jours Heureux, 2006) who's a comedy during a summer camp who's quite popular but I haven't watched it). Omar Sy : his first big role, comedic and dramatic. Until that point, he was famous for his act with Fred Testot, from the duo "Omar & Fred". They met in 1996 and appeared in numerous TV shows (alone or with friends, given there was a huge pool of comedians coming from Paris's "suburbs" at this time). He's from Trappes, a suburban city like the one you saw in the film, with big poverty, gangs, etc. His parents are from Mauritania and Senegal. Won the Cesar, from this point he became "bankable" and got a lot of roles in France but also in the USA. He has a small role in Jurassic World, Inferno and 1 of the Transformers (!!). He is also in the TV series "Lupin", inspired by "The Adventures of Arsene Lupin" (famous novels inspired by Sherlock Holmes). Lupin has become one of the most-watched non-English series on Netflix. More recently, Sy has signed a multi-year feature film deal with Netflix.

Audrey Fleurot (Magali, the redhead :D) is also veeeery popular right now in France. She's filming a lot of movies, but I mainly know her from TV-shows : the critically acclaimed Engrenages, A FRENCH VILLAGE (100% recommend even if it's...well very french history and you'd have to know 1 thing or 2 about France's role during WW2 but she's GREAT in it.), and more recently a police-show who's been adapted in America : H.P.I (or High Potential).

Aude M

A lot of dark humor in this film, yeah. I admit some of them are making me... unconfortable ("what if she's fat? What her weight?", the thing with Magali is borderline..). But it's indeed a feel-good movie, it's working in the end. Recent French movie recommendation : Anatomy Of A Fall (very different, but went to the Oscars and actually won foreign film I think).

Roland

Omar Sy is the lead in the excellent Netflix series Lupin, a modern reimagining of the classic (original) gentleman thief.

Roland

I can't bring myself to watch the US remake....but the two leads are interesting casting for sure.

Love Bryan Cranston. I want to like Kevin Hart but I just can't get there with him. Just comes off as annoying in most things. I hear he's great in the two Jumanji movies

Youtalkingtome

That's awesome. It's hard to imagine a non superhero movie getting a crowd like that today. I'm glad this one did. It was absolutely charming.
