I haven't watched this movie since I was a kid because it scared the ever loving shit out of me. To this day i have vivid memories of the scene where the kids turn into donkeys 😬

I've enjoyed watching these old Disney classics with you but I must admit I was reluctant to rewatch this one because the donkey scene really upset me as a kid, unsurprisingly. I do love Jiminy Cricket though! I'm gonna throw Lady and the Tramp in as a suggestion for your next one as it's one of my favourites and it'll make up for retraumatising me on this one :)

as a child i remember honest john and kitty being so funny but having to skip the pleasure island scene as it was so scary

Im so glad that us commenters are all in solidarity as hating this part of the movie 😂

The donkey scene is upsetting! I was genuinely shocked by it. That must have been horrifying for children.

I can't get over how bonkers the Pleasure Island scene was, and it would have been utterly terrifying as a child.

Good to know that the Pleasure Island scene is just as traumatic now as it was when I was a kid! The smoking thing is interesting. 1940 was a little early for people to be railing against tobacco, I don't think the health consequences were very widely known until much later into that decade. But as a direct consequence of this movie, I've never even held a lit cigarette, let alone smoked one! It always freaked me out too much 😂

Right? Anti-cigarette health campaigns didn't really happen until the 1950's (thanks, Mad Men!), but it was really prominent in the movie. Maybe, like pool, it was just behavior associated with ruffians. Pleasure Island was complete nightmare fuel for kids. I don't know how this movie didn't traumatize generations.

Disney films were pretty sick- Bambi's mother shot (offscreen) in the forest, Dumbo's mother being separated after defending him and "JIm Crow" the racist bird singing blackface Minstrel songs... The Coachman "collecting stupid young boys" on "Pleasure Island" sounds like something out of Epstein files.....impressive animation nonetheless- hadn't seen this since I was 4 or 5 years old..supposedly in the original 1882 story published in a kids newspaper that Pinocchio was based on, the puppet gets Geppetto arrested for child abuse, kills the Cricket, the Fox and Cat become disabled "as punishment" but still lynch the puppet from a tree and it simply ends after his execution....the author rewrote the ending after newspaper editor complaints with the puppet brought back to life and repenting and the film was based on the revised version...so I guess the film was less dark??
