The young woman at the beginning has her own mini-arc. In S3 we meet her in her car in Hamsterdam, buying an 8-ball for herself and her friends. While waiting the dealer tries to make small talk and she shuts him down, clearly nervous about being in the neighborhood. We meet her again in S4, hanging at Andre's shop talking to Andre and another girl about how much her pimp cares about her. This is the scene when Chris and Snoop come in to tell Andre that he will have to ID Omar for a homicide. This is her 3rd and final appearance, and we meet her on the verge of saving her own life.

The woman at the beginning of the episode, at N.A. meeting, she first showed up in season three buying drugs in Hamersterdam. Season four she was in “old face Andre’s” store. I liked McNulty giving a callback to what Bodie told him in the park, “the game is rigged”.

In real life Maryland did pass slots after the show with the provision the money went to schools. almost 15 years later schools aren’t any better

"I don't want some amorphous series detailing society's ills". Feels like a "take that" at some pushback the writers got from execs. How dark Jimmy is getting here, and how what he's doing feels less grounded in "things that actually do or could happen in Baltimore", is AFAIK the main reason this season is divisive.

Nicholas Reed

The guy at the head of the table when the FBI are presenting the Marlo case they got from Lester and Jimmy is the same one who offered to Carcetti and Bond to help with the Marlo case in exchange for the Clay Davis case going federal, which they refused. So his clash with them is the reason no federal agencies are helping BPD with anything for the foreseeable future.

If I recall, Carcetti didn't just "refuse" the US Attorney's offer -- he basically told him (and the governor) to go fuck himself 😆

Thank you! She looked very familiar (I'm sure I will catch some of these smaller pieces better on rewatch).

Gus, editor of the Sun paper, is played by Clark Johnson who directed the pilot of The Wire (as well as The West Wing episode featuring CJ's "The Jackal" -- not to mention a whole slew of other TV shows). To further my nudging, he's also a main cast member in Homicide: Life on the Street.
