The episode where Buffy dips a toe into body horror. Wentworth Miller tearing off his own flesh is still a gross image. Loved the scene with Cordy. She's grown a lot this season from the shallow bully in season 1. Every time I see this episode I think of how ungodly uncomfortable it must have been to swim in the ocean in those heavy suits and all those prosthetics. Poor stunt guys.

- Wave goodbye to the "in every generation..." intro. This is the last episode that uses it. - Hey there, Charles Cyphers, aka Sheriff Brackett from Halloween! You make a great creepy coach! His monologue about Soviet experiments with fish DNA makes me CACKLE. And what exactly does he think will happen? The whole team turns into gill-creatures and ... no one (including the judges) notices? I'm pretty sure there are rules about only humans participating in competitive events! - This is another Mystery Science Theater episode, but I still enjoy it. Apart from the rape stuff (fish rape jokes, really???). The makeup effects are the real star of the episode, of course. - One of the problems with this episode is the timing. We're so close to the end of the season, and instead of ramping up the main plot, we have this goofy episode. I love goofy episodes a LOT, but we've had so much genuinely great stuff, I get why it's not more loved.

This is in my worst 5 episodes list. That being said it was really fun to watch it with you guys because of how much you love these monster of the week episodes. It brings back the freshness and fun of the first time I watched it. Thank you

I can't pick a favorite Buffy hairstyle, SMG in those early seasons looked so damn good in every episode.

I think this episode would have worked perfectly if it came just after “Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered” and just before “Passion.” The tone feels off from the lead up that we’ve been on from “Passion” to the final episodes. I think it’s actually a lot of silly fun and the dry way the coach launches into “after the fall of the Soviet Union…” is a hilarious line reading. It just feels out of place.

I'm so glad you guys loved last weeks ep even half as much as I do, i think it's such an underrated ep and probably in my top ten for the whole show. Idc if it's a bit soap opera, I adore it. Davids performance is really such a good indicator of his abilities- so many actors, particularly those big hunky leading man types, when asked to play a female role even for a single scene either ignore the feminine aspect or way overdo it, make it comedic. Davids understated femininity in that scene is so beautiful to me. He plays it just right. SO funny to go from that to this! It's in the running for most universally hated Buffy episode (though it definitely has major competition). I really appreciate your ability to see the fun in it despite its flaws.

-we finally learn Jonathan's name this episode! Played by danny strong, who's more of a writer and producer these days, but he does pop up in the most random places in the late 90s/early 00s. Jonathan Levinson is a junior btw (like buffy and the rest of the scoobies, except oz, who's a senior) -so is willow being paid to teach? Is she going to her other classes? This subplot has always been so confusing to me -if you need help remembering how to say boreanaz, just remember this silly joke from family guy 😂 https://youtu.be/AdbaPMpZmos?si=JhTNXOMFlHAFfTv4

That last scene was jarring to me. I think (like you) the reality of what was happening was getting in the way. We get such cool set-up shots with artificial lighting (a highlight of the show for me), and here was got these guys in rubber suits, just out in the sun, on a real beach. It was jarring.

I think Buffy’s hair was pretty variable in the high school years, and she’s had some good hair days and bad hair days this season. I agree, I’m not a fan of the straight-back style in this or the previous episodes. However, Cordelia’s hair is ALWAYS on point, and this episode is no exception.

David Bor-ee-AHN-us He has mixed European ancestry, and his surname is Slovene. The pronunciation is not too far off from Spanish.

One of the annoying things about this episode (which I agree is fun in other places) is that the way Angelus gets incorporated is very token and ineffectual. This is not the world-historical menacing vampire we know. However, I think this is the last time a MOTW stands so far outside the main plot - S1 and S2 has been like the X-Files in that the standalones often have little relationship with the serial narrative, but I think from here all the new threats and more comic-relief episodes are woven together with the ongoing story, which was a radical thing for network television at the time.

I did not expect these comments saying this is such a universally hated episode. I agree it's among the more campy/silly, but I thought the concept was fun, the twist of "they're not being eaten, they are turning" was great, and the make-up and costumes were awesome!

Whilst watching along with you guys, I've managed to find a lot to like in my previously-hated episodes. Go Fish, apparently, is the exception 😂 The make-up/costuming of the fish monsters is pretty good, I'll give it that. And on a wildly shallow level, I'll give the episode a tickmark for showing Xander in a Speedo. But that's it, that's all I like!

I think if it had happened earlier in the season, it wouldn’t be quite as hated as it is now. The fact that it put almost a complete halt on the main narrative so close to the finale drew a lot of ire. I’ve seen it happen with a lot of other shows, too, like The L Word and Stranger Things. Perfectly decent episodes are hated because it wasn’t what people wanted to see.

We adore sports in our country but academic grades dont get changed for it thats so wild. The practical monster effects look so good and hold up very well also skins suits are so creepy

I don't think the grade change for sports performance happens in US states that are less focused on those sports, like in my home state that would almost never be a thing, but it is a thing that definitely happens in a lot of the US, wild as it is.
