Actuarial Lurker

Saw this first run in the theater- TV screen doesn't give the sea battle scenes justice. Gene Rodenberry said that in addition to being "Wagon Train" in space he viewed the original Star Trek as Master and Commander in space- with ships weeks from home, encountering enemies at random, finding new islands with strange people- and modeled Kirk on the captain in the novels

Actuarial Lurker

This was nominated for TEN Oscars- all the technical ones and got wiped out by Return of the King as you already noted

A big part of the reason for this movie's second life after its underwhelming theater run was the emergence of bluray, 1080p TVs, and 7.1 surround sound- the spectacular visuals and sound mixing made it a "must own" first bluray for a new entertainment center. It was the first movie my first post-college roommate got for his new 70-inch TV.
