The university of Oxford is made up of quite a number of individual colleges (Cambridge similarly). The colleges were founded at various periods since the founding of the universities. They provide teaching and accommodation for students, and employ a number of academic teaching and research staff (Fellows) who tutor students within the college in their subject, and also lecture to the whole university. Lewis had a fellowship first in Magdalen College Oxford, and later in Magdalene College Cambridge. He would teach English Literature to small groups or individuals in his college rooms, and also give lectures in the lecture halls to students from any college studying Eng Lit. Fellows usually dined in college at High Table most nights in term time, with much competitive intellectual jousting between Fellows of very different disciplines and ideologies. In Lewis's time, all the colleges and the Felliwships were single sex, nearly all male, one or two women's colleges.
