The Long Night

Comments

I'm watching it as I write my comments, so if you'll say something about it later, sorry ;-) First of all, since when do you put your Artillery (trebuchets and catapults) in FRONT of the infantry??? Melisandre was riding FROM where the Army of the Dead was... she's got quite the plot armor, no? And the Dothrakis have a distrinct hatred of magic use... and they're cheering their swords getting aflame? Yeah, it's cool, but makes absolutely no sense in regards to the story. Good for entertainment though... The Dothraki cavalry was used in a totally useless way (last episode, Jon and the other generals said "We can't afford to go to them, the Army of the Dead are too many")

This is my favorite episode, held aloft by the many brilliant episodes of buildup. A big part of that is the score, such an amazing piece.

Wouldn't Oil Barrels set aflame thrown on the side of the wall be a good deterrent for the Army of the Dead climbing? In the last episode of last season, they had 500 barrels ready in Kings Landing, and Bronn asked them to double that amount. But no, in Winterfell, we cannot spare any barrels to protect the walls... iiish.

Ok... I know you were a bit caught up by emotions when you called out "That's cheating", but we knew from waaaaaayyyyyy past that his army had a relentless source of new members.

In regards to the Crypt thing, my gripe is not what you think (they didn't think that the crypt was FULL of dead bodies). No, that's not the real issue IMO. If you (again) recall last episode of last season, they had a wight in a wooden crate, and it couldn't get out of it until Sandor pushed it out of it after opening it. Now, you're telling me that they can go push open rocks, in the crypt? Come on, be consistent in your decisions, Benioff and Weiss (the showrunners)!

I do have mixed feelings in regards to Arya being the one ending the Night King. Yeah, it's cool to see the season 3 Melisandre vision of her closing many eyes, of many colors including blue. That's a long payoff. But as Tess explains, it doesn't make sense. Jon or Dany (as Azor Ahai), and especially Jaimie (the King Slayer) would've been much bigger payoffs.

You're SOOOO right in regards to the White Walkers back story. Why were they doing all those shapes on the ground with the body parts of their victims? But the trope of killing the Night King will kill everyone else he's created and their "descendants" is okay for me.

It really seems like they had Arya kill the night king because they spent all that time dedicated to her becoming a lethal assassin and she has only really used it to kill Walder Frey. They talked about her list so much in earlier seasons but as she pointed out this season most are already dead. The person that made the most sense, character motivation wise, for her to kill was Joffrey but the character arcs did not line up at all. The only remaining character that would be satisfying for her character is Cersei but she is behind Dany, Tyrion and even Jamie for what makes sense to the story.

Aegon’s prophecy states, that a prince or a savior who would unite the realm against the “darkness” from the north. It never said that the savior would kill the night king. Jon and Dany did unite as many people of the realm as possible to stop the long night.

I love this episode. I love how dark it is, not only because the darkness represents the chaos and hopelessness of facing the potential death of the human race, but also because fighting a battle at night in a world with no electricity would actually be chaotic and dark. I've grown so tired of battle scenes that look like brightly-lit, slow-motion video games, so I found the attempt at realism here to be refreshing. I also love the scene of Arya killing the Night King. It was unexpected yet believable, and the intense score helped to make it one of the most memorable moments in the series. And an even more effective moment for me was Jon standing up and screaming in rage and defiance at the dragon. He'd realized he'd lost, that everything he'd been working for had failed, and his way of accepting his own death was to scream out his last, dying breath. And the final shot of Melisandre walking into the dawn and to her death was striking.

I like the idea of her not being able to finish the list. As cool as it would be to see her do that, I love that it's probably not gunna happen. She doesn't get the satisfaction of revenge. I think that would be tragic and make a ton of sense for her character. That being said...it makes no sense that she's the one to kill The Night King. That's where I've landed on it

I mostly agree with you! I don't hate the lighting either. I love that the entire episode is basically silhouette. The Arya thing is where it falls apart for me. It was memorable and honestly it was cool and surprising but it just doesn't make sense to me really. I do think the image of her killing him will be iconic but man, it should have been Jon. Melisandre waling to her death was beautiful
