I’m glad you liked the movie. I was a background actor in this. All the swim club stuff was filmed in 55 degree weather which got me the flu. This started as a direct sequel to Avalon. The grandmother in this is from Avalon and it’s the same house in the suburbs on the street where Barry grew up. When David Simon suggested the crime angle in the story Barry decided to not highlight the connection even though Bens line about his relative at the end of the movie is a direct connection to Avalon.

Little Melvin in this is Melvin Williams. Inspiration for Avon in the wire/ Actor in the wire as the church deacon who helps Bunny and Dennis. Orlando Jones resemblance to him got him the role in this. David Simon was already planning a Little Melvin show once he and Barry Levinson wrapped Homicide, that show of course became The Wire.

Signs like the one at the swim club were common in Baltimore in the 50s except most listed Catholics instead of dogs. It was illegal for the guys to go to that Halloween party because that rich neighborhood would have been restricted. The swim club where this was filmed has appeared in many Baltimore movies. It’s 10 minutes from me and my dad was a lifeguard there in the 60s. It had a rather racist end. The family that owned it had to sell because of a inability to get insurance. They sold the land to a Muslim group who wanted to build a mosque on an undeveloped portion and people broke in and fire bombed all the buildings so they could never use the swim club.

This movie does have a connection to Rose on Maisel. Shane West who played Ted went from this to shooting the pilot of Once and Again which was also starred Marin Hinkle and was her big break because even though the show wasn’t a ratings hit it was a critical hit. I ran some lines with Shane and told him I thought it would be a hit show.

I've been to Baltimore 6 or 7 times on business over the past 35 years- to audit a client, consult to a client, and for several professional conferences. also went on a personal trip with my wife (she has a friend who is an elderly Jesuit Priest who she would visit for Ignatian Catholic spiritual direction- sort of advanced directed 1-1 religious retreat). The Waterfront has always been "cleaned up" for tourists and business but has expanded from a one city blook veneer of gentrification to a whole neighborhood. The other areas are VERY poor- kind of bombed out like area of Detroit or the Rust Belt....great seafood restaurants....

This movie bombed. Warner Brothers didn’t even try to get it a wide release and other than a 2 week run at the historic theater in Baltimore it went right to VHS. This is why it was the last of Barry’s Baltimore movies. Ben and Shane had better luck filming a teen comedy Get Over It with singer Sisqo who they met at a party here in Baltimore.

There is a nice arts district that was in this film and seen on The Wire frequently and some other nice areas. The challenge is knowing how to get to them around the bad areas. The philosophy of hoping that if you make tourists travel through the bad areas that would bring business to improve them has not had the effect they wanted and driven down traffic to tourist areas even by the locals.

What scene were you in?? I'm glad that this ultimately is a standalone film. Love the idea of it being a spiritual sequel instead.

Just noticed this but the guy who breaks up the fight in the house at the party is Misha Collins who played Castile on the series Supernatural.

This movie was old favorite that I remember renting (!) back in the day in high school. An amazing cast with a great story, it's too bad it did not perform well. Though I've seen it before, this is the first time I caught at the end that he says he remembers his first time kissing Sylvia, implying that there were other times later. Orlando Jones is really a talent, though he has such a limited role to play here. I always thought of him as a comedic actor because of his role on MAD TV especially. But recently I learned that he's also been a comedic writer for years and wrote on many 90s shows including Different World and Roc, as well as being one of the main writers of MAD Tv. He was also fantastic as Mr. Nancy on American Gods, one of the few highlights of what I thought was a somewhat messy adaptation.
