I agree that there was no need for these episodes to be that long. As you said, they could have written them to be 50-60 minutes and made 7 or 8 episodes. Just an odd decision. I really appreciated the conversations in this episode, all the moral debates which exemplified where the characters saw themselves and the whole situation. I especially liked Tyrion and Varys discussing their feelings and ramifications of what could happen. It's exposition, but it's exposition that is true to what we've come to know about these characters. I always have to remind myself that while this is fantasy, it has, from the beginning, been a tragedy in the Shakespearean sense of the word.

I totally agree. Fantasy has never been done this well in my opinion. There is so much intrigue and I'm invested in every single character!

What you mentioned about Daenerys and her self-centered attitude in this episode is something a lot of fans were angry about when this season aired. It's not exactly coming out of nowhere - we've seen her being harsh and inflexible before, and we've been warned about how greatness coexists with cruelty in her family, but still, she's such a beloved character, and she's been on such an epic journey, that it's very frustrating to watch her turn into yet another power-hungry ruler. I have similar feelings regarding Jaime as well. After everything he's been through, all the growth we've witnessed, he decides to turn his back on the honor he fought so hard to restore and just goes back to Cersei ? Then what the hell was the point of everything before that ?

This episode has my least favorite moment of the entire series, which I like to call Deus Ex Ballista. :D I just hate how they *instantly* kill a dragon completely out of nowhere. Like a lot of things in the last half of this season, I understand why they thought it would be dramatic that way, I just still don't like it. And Jaime leaving for Cersei... ugh. All the terrible things he remembers doing were from before he lost his hand, before he was on a redemption arc. I'm going to say I enjoy what happens with him in the next few episodes, but I hated that he left Brienne and his chance to be happy. He failed to understand that he earned his redemption. But enough about what I didn't like, wow I noticed some things on this viewing that I didn't the first time. Look at Dany's face when Missandei is killed, she actually looks a lot like her brother. I love the way Tyrion *asks Qyburn to help him save the city* during their negotiations, and pushes past him when all he gets back is posturing. He has fully left behind his cynicism and is being genuinely vulnerable with his sister to try to avoid catastrophe. Also still love the Hound in every scene he gets. "Of course it is [about sex], you twat. And why shouldn't it be?" That's such a great message, you've cheated death, now go live. Ultimately, Gendry doesn't get his lady, but that was the right call for Arya, and I like that she showed him that his offer of marriage was very appreciated even if she couldn't take it. On the episode length, I think I agree that this really felt like two episodes. The Long Night needed to be this long, but this episode didn't. The last three episodes are 77, 77, and 78 minutes long, and they could easily have been edited into 4 episodes. I was excited to get longer episodes when this first aired, but it just doesn't seem necessary after the Battle of Winterfell.

Exactly. I can typically buy anything if they sell me on it. I'm not sold. Not yet. I gotta see how this plays out

Youtalkingtome

Right. The episodes are getting overstuffed. The Jaime thing frustrates me so freaking much. I guess we'll see how this plays out. It's not over yet and maybe I'll enjoy how they conclude it

Michael Bennett names aptly Deus Ex Balista, but it's even worst. From high above flying, there's NO WAY she doesn't see the 12 to 15 Euron's ships. Not a chance. It's just a camera angle that made US see it as a surprise for the rest of the fleet. But even worst, it's when Benioff was asked about it directly, he answered "Danny forgot about the Ironfleet..." (Facepalm) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahoHDU0T44I Just... no.... The story mixes so many things at this point, but not in a logical way. Ok, Missandei's demise is a horrible thought for both Grey Worm and Daenerys. And after getting that information, Jamie decides that he can't leave his sister to herself, after all that she did to him? Oh boy, this is just crushing with 2 fists an arc that took years to build. Whatever he says to justify why he's not a good person, they don't add to why he thinks he's "hateful"... Unless we have a better payoff (Won't say anything more, but we'll talk about it in one of the 2 (!) remaining episodes) Oh, and wait for it.... It goes even more downhill on every next episodes... Damn did they miss their send-off... I'm still going to watch it with you because it's important to see 'em, it's the biggest show in history! But I watched them not so long ago to see if I was too critical. Unfortunately, I wasn't!

It really is falling apart. I don't think it's a train wreck yet. I am a little disappointed in this episode
